Back in the day, I would see bio-hazard cars being bought on the auction with dead people blood stains. The smell would not come out no matter what was done. I remember one still has bloody surgical gloves in the backseat.
When I was 7 someone brought over a car with bullet holes in the windshield. I found shells under and between the seats. So what did I do? I took one of them to school for show and tell. I remember telling the principal that "its just a Pullet". I was still taking E.S.L., so I didn't know that "bullet" was spelled with a "B". In Russian, bullet is said "Poola".
Ahh, Memories..

I just think that buying a banged up Mercedes for used Ford Focus money, and expecting to fix and maintain it on a Ford Focus budget isn't going to end very well for the OP. Once (of if) he gets the car fully functional and road legal, I have a feeling that the maintenance and repairs are going to kill him. He has no clue what kind of other gremlins that car may have in store for him....which is extremely scary in its own right when purchasing a car with no documented history that has never been hit. He's assuming that the previous owner (or owners) took very good care of the car since they didn't anticipate an accident. I'm really not sure how he reached that conclusion....but I know that I'd be expecting the worst and would be looking for any way possible to bail out of this bad decision as quickly and with as little financial consequence as possible. Hell, even if he drove it off a cliff and got nothing for it, it would still likely end up costing him a lot less than what he's facing by trying to repair it and then own it. He's young, ambitious, and extremely naive. I wonder if his wife has read through this thread and knows what he's up against? She might not approve of his decision to move forward if she did. I know my wife would be ready to kill me.

well considering the mess his wife got herself into with her last car purchase, she probably also thinks fixing this S class is a great idea

Your assuming that I'm under the expectation/assumption, that I'll need a Ford Focus budget to afford the maintenance.
I know what I'm getting myself into. That's the difference between our wifes. Mine's got my back, even in foolish endeavors.
Some of you play powerball, some online poker. This is how I gamble. If I lose, at least I've got a pretty lawn ornament.
The mess my wife was in was not by her own doing, but by Carfax and Dick Hannah Dealerships. They paid for their mess up.
I don't think there is another story where Carfax did what happened to my wife.

Let's leave the wife out of it, guys.
Keep the photos coming...I want to see the pics after taking off the bumper.

Obviously I'm not there and can't see the car. I will say that from the pictures shown so far, the damage is not similar to mine nor is what I would expect to see from the impact. It does, to some extent, look like someone punched it. Here's to hoping against all hope that your 'new' car isn't damage beyond reasonable repair.

BTW, is it safe to assume that neither you or your wife are financial advisers by trade? What do the both of you do for a living?
And most municipalities have restrictions on people leaving dilapidated cars in their front yards as ornaments. Although I've seen many areas where that is a common practice. I've just never seen an S-class as a lawn ornament before. You'll be a pioneer.

You said that you're a perfectionist and will make your car look perfect with a rubber mallet, bumper cover, and some new tail lights for less that $1000. I really don't think you had any clue what you were getting yourself into. But that's OK. It will just be a very expensive lesson in this foolish endeavor. It's only money, right?

Seems like majority of you guys just want to see this poor fellow's project fail............so as to pad yourself in the back and say "I was right......" the guy made a horrible decision purchasing a wrecked S550, but geeeez, the car doesn't even look as bad as some of you guys are making it seem. Let a qualified person assess the damages first....... before the "i said it so" crew start feasting on him.

ok, I've read some of these posts but not all....
S55 how are you doing on your project ?
Last I saw it was sitting somewhere and you didn't have a key yet ?
I've contemplated buying a slightly damaged car in the past but never had the guts to pull the trigger so to speak and try and repair one.
So Im watching to see how you do

Given the way it's sitting and the one pic showing COMAND with a "Device Not Found" error message, before you spend any money or much time, make sure the thing runs and the systems check out. Can't really take a mallet to COMAND. Well you can, but just once.
