Can't Pump Gas

Can't Pump Gas
I cannot pump gas without it stopping constantly regardless of the gas station.
I've read this is the carbon gas filter and it is a pain to replace. Any OTC fixes? Anything else that it could be?
Thanks in advance.

Thats because your driving a BMW.
If there is a tube pinched which leads to the gas tank it will pop the gas nozzle. This may be due from pressure from inflowing gas not being dissipated.

it's your charcoal canister or the valve attached to it. Are you getting any codes/check engine light?.
I was getting error code 0954 - Mechanical defect or component Y58/4 (Activated charcoal canister shut-off valve) permanently closed (P2422)
I took it all apart, cleaned the valve, blew out the canister with compressed air and all is well. No more codes and gas pumps normally.
read this thread, should help you

if you don't feel like doing all that, you can just buy a new Charcoal Canister or a new Shut off Valve or both.
Part number for canister is 2214700659. ($377). Should come with a new shut off valve.
part number for shut off valve is 0014701393 ($110). You may be able to get away with just replacing the valve.
You may also need an updated wiring harness for the shut off valve. part number is 2114400134. Cost is $17

ya it's a crappy design. it seems that the valve should have some sort of a filter on it, instead of having a paper filter between the valve and the canister. the valve sucks in all the dirt and gets stuck

Thanks for your write up and illustrative photos , what a skill
Older Jaguars at least one of them I had definitely acted up like a mule instead of something out of feline species when it comes to gas stations

A temporary solution for filling would be to pull the pump nozzle back out of the fill hole a little bit....and only put the pump lock on the 2nd notch instead of the 3rd. Almost sounds like a sex trick.

1. What's the key to getting off the metal clip on the vacuum house? I tried pinching and squeezing to no avail. Any tips?
2. Where do I spray the carb cleaner?
Inside the surge valve and inside the canister? Do I need to take the saucer shaped filter for access?
Sorry for the dumb questions. Thank you

1. You have to cut the metal clip, it's not reusable. Put a new screw type clamp on the hose after.
2. You should take the valve off the canister, it just twists off. Then you can take the valve apart if you want. You have to pry the clips at the top without breaking them. Then clean everything out inside the valve and put it back together. You can also try spraying into the valve without taking it apart. Then push up from the bottom to make sure it moves up and down freely.
