I assumed it electrically assisted as well as with a pump. There are reservoirs for power steering and abc fluid in the engine.

The only reason I think it's part electric is because I still have power steering when it's on eco stop.

Whining / whirring noises from electrohydraulic power steering pump (EHPS) during steering movements, check condition rubber mounts (370 in diagram); check the power supply connector/harness for oil that can sometimes cause noises when steering and/or reduced power assistance; may be pump (current part # 2164600380).

Note, if oil is seen at connector/harness request MB goodwill repair. Even though you are out of warranty, argue your VIN is within affected range as documented in attached bulletin.

Will look into this tomorrow, thank you!

Also, thanks for the data card. Is that from MB? Looking at the list I noticed that the MCT sport transmission is listed. Would this be right? Thought mine was the normal 7 speed transmission.

MBUSA data card when they recently upgraded to new system codes are correct but sometimes corresponding description is erroneous.

Might I ask what the part I circled in this picture is? I thought that that was the power steering pump.

So... here's your ABC pump & pulsation damper with code 487 no where to be found.

I believe you have engine M278 which is a later version than my ABC equipped 2007 SL which has engine M273. It appears MB have moved the pump to a much more accessible area, which overcomes the most challenging and knuckle busting part of the job (in addition to have to work underneath) to loosen bolts. Not to hijack the thread, just interested to know "Can DAS systems test Dampners?"

I definitely have that pump. Pulled the engine cover and physically saw it. So does my car have the previous EPHS pump you showed (2164600380) ?

yes, mine is the M278 4.7 bi-turbo

this is a video of the noise its making, listen out when the car decelerates to 2000rpm. It makes a sound like a power steering pump with no oil. If i turn the steering when it does it, it gets louder.

Yes, all diagrams I posted are VIN specific to your vehicle electric steering & ABC pump oddly code 487 (ABC) is not documented.

Hard to hear clearly enough in the video to be helpful, even with higher volume.

Mr. Konigstiger: Can DAS test ABC dampeners?

So, it still could be the electric steering fault that warrants the recall?

It doesnt really come sound out in the video, but that slight noise you hear, just imagine the noise when you turn a steering with low fluid. As in not, similar, exactly the same sound. I even feel it slightly in the steering.

Not a recall but rather a service bulletin normally only covered by warranty but since a specific VIN range is documented (of which your VIN is included) if oil found at connector/harness you can ask MB for goodwill repair out of warranty. Cannot, of course, say definitively this is your problem as it relates to your noise complaint but it is to be considered.
