abc pump or power steering whinning noise Please help

Before i buy and install the wrong part. Everything is working okay. no leaks. I get a whinning noise that changes with rpm speed. One guy told me it was abc and another the power steering. Thank you for your time.

when you turn the steering all they way to lock and push a bit- does the whine change?

also what car? on most of the abc cars the tandem pump is both an abc and power steering pump

Nothing changes when turning the wheel all the way. Its an 08 cl550. After doing some reading on here it seems like its most likly the abc Pulsation damper. Which would be a good thing. a lot cheaper

There is a guy here that reported replacing the accumulators solved his whining. This is not common and might have been a temporal accidental fix for the usual culprit- worn out abc pump.

If your car has over 50k miles I would first flush the abc/ steering fluid. that doesn't fix it I would replace the accumulators and if that doesn't fix it would replace the pump. Check also belt for cracks and/ or chaffing.

the "tandem" pump you have is one unit for both abc and power steering. what i dont remember is if the pentosin circuit for the abc and the powersteering are separate or the same. i think on the cl they were the same, on the sl they were separate- i might be wrong though.

i dont know any shops outside of the dealer network. and as you mentioned they are expensive. try to find a reputable indy that knows abc cars. not all of them understand it let alone work on the abc system.

Just did this, if the noise follows RPM and is strongest between idle and 2000rpm (and then tails off after that), it's the pulsation damper. The pulsation damper is the accumulator that mounts right to the tandem pump, they're known to tear and there's a TSB out on them for failing any time after 60k miles. ~$300 part and about 15min labor at least on the V12 engines, I don't think it's much harder for the V8s.

Yes. Had this issue and replaced pulsation damper on the tandem pump in a 2008 at 82K miles. Easy to do on the V12. I read somewhere that on the V8 the head is in the way and the pump needs to be loosened to get the damper off/on. Can't confirm this though.

Do you have the V8? Looking for a little DIY info on how to get the damper out. Seems like the pump might have to be moved. Wondering if the pump can be moved without opening any fluid lines. Thanks.

Sorry for reviving an old thread.

mine is making a whining noise at the 2000rpm mark when driving only. Not in neutral or park.

it sounds like a power steering pump without oil. If I turn the steering when it’s making the noise, it gets louder.

Could it be the damper?

Check out r230 forum for abc system maintenance. Rudeny created a process to replace the dampner without removing the pump. Saves $$$. Process might be slightly different on various models but I know it works on sl and s class. Good luck and keep us posted.

I can attest to the fact that the above method works without removing the pump but you do need to loosen it up to move it forward.

I'm not familiar with your motor. Do you have the ABC suspension? If not, then you won't have a pulsation damper.

Have ABC. And behind that pump, there is like a bit that looks like the damper.

My guess you have electric steering pump, not ABC. Run VIN, check for code 487 (ABC).

When my car has eco stopped, I still have power steering. So I think it has electric power steering.

However, I have a button next to the screen that when pressed, selects 'Active Body Control' to sport of comfort

My vin is WDD216373732A029556 if that helps

it makes no sense that turning the steering wheel would alter the sound if you have electric power steering. The pulsation damper is usually heard most between idle and about 2500 rpm and is usually accompanied by some vibration you can feel through the steering wheel or brake pedal. As to where yours is, you're going to have to look into that.
