abc pump or power steering whinning noise Please help
Before i buy and install the wrong part. Everything is working okay. no leaks. I get a whinning noise that changes with rpm speed. One guy told me it was abc and another the power steering. Thank you for your time.

when you turn the steering all they way to lock and push a bit- does the whine change?
also what car? on most of the abc cars the tandem pump is both an abc and power steering pump

Nothing changes when turning the wheel all the way. Its an 08 cl550. After doing some reading on here it seems like its most likly the abc Pulsation damper. Which would be a good thing. a lot cheaper

There is a guy here that reported replacing the accumulators solved his whining. This is not common and might have been a temporal accidental fix for the usual culprit- worn out abc pump.
If your car has over 50k miles I would first flush the abc/ steering fluid. that doesn't fix it I would replace the accumulators and if that doesn't fix it would replace the pump. Check also belt for cracks and/ or chaffing.

i dont know any shops outside of the dealer network. and as you mentioned they are expensive. try to find a reputable indy that knows abc cars. not all of them understand it let alone work on the abc system.

Just did this, if the noise follows RPM and is strongest between idle and 2000rpm (and then tails off after that), it's the pulsation damper. The pulsation damper is the accumulator that mounts right to the tandem pump, they're known to tear and there's a TSB out on them for failing any time after 60k miles. ~$300 part and about 15min labor at least on the V12 engines, I don't think it's much harder for the V8s.

Do you have the V8? Looking for a little DIY info on how to get the damper out. Seems like the pump might have to be moved. Wondering if the pump can be moved without opening any fluid lines. Thanks.

Sorry for reviving an old thread.
mine is making a whining noise at the 2000rpm mark when driving only. Not in neutral or park.
it sounds like a power steering pump without oil. If I turn the steering when it’s making the noise, it gets louder.
Could it be the damper?

Check out r230 forum for abc system maintenance. Rudeny created a process to replace the dampner without removing the pump. Saves $$$. Process might be slightly different on various models but I know it works on sl and s class. Good luck and keep us posted.

When my car has eco stopped, I still have power steering. So I think it has electric power steering.
However, I have a button next to the screen that when pressed, selects 'Active Body Control' to sport of comfort
My vin is WDD216373732A029556 if that helps

it makes no sense that turning the steering wheel would alter the sound if you have electric power steering. The pulsation damper is usually heard most between idle and about 2500 rpm and is usually accompanied by some vibration you can feel through the steering wheel or brake pedal. As to where yours is, you're going to have to look into that.
