Sway Bar bolts removal

Hey Guys,

I have an 07 s550 and im trying to replace the sway bar. It seems like a straight forward job. However, i just cant seem to be able get the sway bar bracket bolts off. Ive tried over and over again. Im using an 11mm metric. Does this bolts require a special tool or something? Please see picture.

You need the actual E10 or E12 socket that fits the bolt, you've rounded them off by using the wrong size so good luck now, they are loc-tited in there so they are not the easiest to remove. If you have the right socket and a good size ratchet or power tools they come right out.

this. right female socket and just a small amount of heat to melt the loctite ... then impact wrench and they come off easily.

cant quite tell, but one looks sort of ok, the other looks stripped a bit to me. good luck. you can always cut and retap if they become hopeless.

What's the problem? Can you get the bolts to turn or not?

They definitely need E-Torx sockets. Never use regular sockets.

I've encountered a few problems with those bolts before.

Okay, so i was able to remove the bolts. It took awhile but i finally got them off. I'm now in the process of installing the new sway bar. I remember reading somewhere that its better to add some glue to the sway bar bracket. This keeps it from making noise while driving. Should i add some Loctite glue to the bracket? Is this true? Thanks.

thats what i read also , but there was only a few people that had that problem (and i think it wasnt the loctite but some special glue/epoxy) so i wouldnt mess with it... at least for now or until you hear any noises.

You shouldn't have to add any glue to the brackets, if the bracket is moving enough to make noise, the bushings need to be replaced. The brackets just keep the bushings snug to the subframe, they shouldn't need to be super tight. You also might want to replace those bolts before putting it all back together, they looked fairly rounded from your attempts with the 11mm socket. A few bucks in hardware now might save a few hours in labor later if you ever have to do it again.
