Thinking of picking up a 2010 S400 as a project. As others have discussed the elimination of the hybrid system, it seems that also requires a lot of time and $8k-$10k? Seems way too high to be left with even less HP and MPG?

my thought, what could make a S400 Hybrid better? Swapping with a S600 V12, lol. No but really, because these cars are almost free on the used market (non-running) I think it’s foolish to spend $4k-$10k in hybrid parts to get them running and still have the traditional power train issues to worry about.

is an engine swap possible to a 5.5 or 6.2 from a wrecked S550 or S63?

Anything is possible, you can put any engine into anything, just a matter of time and money. You can have a conversion from S400 hybrid to S350 specs done by someone else for $8k. You can do it yourself for less money and about one year of very difficult work (ask me how I know). S400 is bad by design, even if you make it better (how??) you still have a bad car with bad design and poor reliability and poor fuel economy by comparison to alternatives. I would summarize 5 options for S400 owners:
0. keep throwing money into unreliable car
1. spend $8k to convert to S350
2. spend a cost of used S550 to convert to S550 specs
3. spend a double cost of used V12 S600 to convert to S600 specs
4. spend even more to convert to AMG specs (it's not just the engine, it's brakes, suspension etc etc)

Only one of those options makes sense to me.

if I went with option 1 as a DIY, do you have a documented list/instructions? If I knew what’s needed, I can film and document the process for others.

what was the DIY cost to make it an S350?

I would rather do an engine swap, but that’s also a big undertaking as I wouldn’t know where to start.

nothing sounds better than taking an underperforming/poor MPG engine and swapping for a thirsty high performance engine that’s much more reliable.

Sorry, it's too complicated and not recommended as a DYI project. Swapping engines mechanically it's a child's play, almost anyone can do it. Hybrid removal is an order of magnitude more complicated. The cheapest way it's having someone else do it (like my mechanic can do it for $8k), which is a small fraction of the R&D time and equipment/parts cost to do it by yourself.

If I knew what's involved I would not even start it, but I like to finish what I start :-)
