Not sure I understand this thread. How can a person not bond with the S550. Its the best car I have ever had. The power and the ride is second to none. I drive mine every time I can. When you get into the throttle a bit and the power comes on while the smooth shifting of the trans pushes you back in the massaging seat there is nothing like it. I think my wife is tired of hearing me say wow this car is so fast and smooth. Take the car out on the freeway and push it up to 80 to 90 and it glides like glass. You are Totally in control at high speeds and it tracks like an arrow. You can understand how this car is made for, and can do 120 to 150 on the auto bond in Germany. I wish we could get up to those speeds here in the USA, I think it would be fun in the S. Now those speeds in other cars not made for it would be life threating and out of control. Remember the cars of the 70's fast in a straight line but totally out of control and all over the road. The S has nothing like that feel and its just the opposite.
Now if I had to park on the city streets of Chicago it would not be one of my favorites, but then again that's why I use the parking apps. You would not want to park the S on the city streets it would get beat to sh**.

As I am born and raised in Germany, I get your point, as this is exactly what the S has been designed for. And it is called Autobahn!

However for me, driving this big car in rush hour city traffic does just not work and my previous E was much better suited for this, so this is what I am going back to.

2007 S600
07 S600 221

I bought my 2007 s600 last April. Had 55k miles on it and I've been using it as my daily driver ever since. I'm sitting at 64k miles now and until just last week have had 0 issues. I am now getting intermittent p0300 codes and a check engine light that turns on and off at random. Replacing coils soon for a cylinder 3 misfire which seems to be the culprit. Outside of that, and outside of the annoying Park Assist interference beeps, the car has been an absolute dream to daily drive.

To each their own.

I am glad I went back to the E, as for me, it is a much easier and more enjoyable car to drive in every day traffic. I unfortunately very rarely drove 80 to 90 mph with the S, to feel like I was "gliding on glass".

The cost of ownership of the E is also much cheaper compared to the S.

Great post. I drove my S at 85 mph last week for the first time. Rides better than anything I have ever driven.

Why is that GREAT to hear? Your car has more than double the miles compared to Eiskrieger's.

Agreed but my car was babied and has a great service history. I know anything can go bust at anytime but I am so happy to have this car. I get the feeling will do well.

Thumbs up 160k miles

Nice E-Class S70Houston.

I've been using my S550 for commuting since I bought it with 13K miles, I'm on 160k now. As long as you do your maintenance and keep it up, you'll be fine. I've been finally giving the S a break with the 2012 GL550 I just got a 1.5 months ago. Love it for bad weather and don't have to worry about pot holes in the north east.

I just changed both front air struts last year for the first time (roughly 140K). ARNOTT lifetime replacements
Intake manifold replacement at about 115K
I did a radiator replacement in November (about 155K), and heater valve replacement.
New motor mounts at last year, new tranny mount 2 years ago.

Still runs like new and looks even better. I enjoy driving the S way more than any other benz I've owned. It looks big but drives like an E with a better ride and way more options.

Right!!!!!! Fun and a pleasure to drive. My S550 has been my daily driver since 2015. I am always looking for places to go in it.
Take it out on a winding road next time were you can open it up and report back on your thoughts... : )
I had a Lexus GS350 before the S550 and when I test drove an S after getting out of the GS, on the same streets, it was like I was in a different world. My wife and I looked at each other and said Wow what a nice car. The GS felt like a go-cart, sold the GS in a few weeks and bought the S550. Still loving it 4 years later.

True an OEM S550 prob won't have the feel... My modded S550 feels way quicker than a stock E. My bro had a E55, that's def is on another level
To all their own opinions...

True words^^^. Similar story here. Picked up my 2012 in 2013 with ~28k miles. Sitting on 114k now. Runs like a super sonic brick on glass. Waranty is thru a credit union. Replaced struts once, front ball joints/A arms and motor and trans mounts recently. Oil gets changed every 5000 mi. no matter what. Old habit.

Averaging about 17k mi/yr. and it glides at 110. Excellent DD.

Looking for a 222 but not very hard.

I have a 2007 S600 also and get the intermittent P0300, P0800, P1170 with the CEL on. I traced it to cheaper gas. Probably additives. Go buy a bottle of Techron at Advance Auto or fill it up with Mobile premium. I used Mobile and took it out on the freeway for five minutes. The light went off.

I agree with you S70, it drives WAY better than an E! But that is really SO subjective.

So much of this topic is about what you want in the car. I like quiet. My E430 was reasonably quiet below 50mph, but after that a bit windnoisy. Normal commute speeds for me are anywhere from 40 to 70mph, so my S550 is preferred. There are parking spaces here with plenty of room, so the S is fine. I commute for 35-50 minutes depending on traffic and the comfortable seats in the S are welcome. I'm going to lunch today with 3 colleagues and they will be comfortable and perhaps want to drive around a bit since the S is so comfy.

I've had E's, S's, SL's and ML and several D's, the S will always be my favorite, until it is not.

To be honest, I 100% understand why you went back to the W211. The W211 was my first Mercedes and I really loved it. I loved the way it looked, the big circle headlights, the oversized round fenders, and hood. The LED tail lights and the over overall shape of the car. It was classic looking with all the modern amenities of a newer car. The lines of the car were great. It had a great ride, great interior, decent power and was built like a tank. What I didn't like about it were the seats. I found them VERY uncomfortable on long trips. I had mine for 3 fairly trouble free years and for all the reasons I mentioned prior is what made me upgrade to an S class. The only issue with the S class was that it completely ruined me for other cars. In particular my 4Runner and my BMW 3 Series convertible. The S was so large, so comfortable, and so powerful it was the only thing I wanted to drive. I still wanted a convertible so I sold the BMW 3 Series and had to buy a BMW 6 Series which is the closest thing I could find in comfort and power to the S class. I do agree parking it in Manhattan is a Pain in the ***, but I do it with little issue. However, if I can I would take my old 3 BMW as parking a 3 Series is night and day compared to the S class. I will still lean towards taking the 6 Series, even though its just about as wide as the S class it's not as long and it makes it the easier of the two to park.

It has been fun, but for me the car has way too many gadgets and is too big to be driven back and forth to work each.

Thanks to ALL of you for all your help and assistance. I am sure you will most likely find me on the W211 or W212 forum in the future.
I really can't get over how the current E looks literally no different than the C other than the day time running light .

Btw, check it this video out for what it's worth. Good luck.

Enjoyed the 211 but 219 replacement (gift for my wife) was a one of our best cars ever. Heading back to Scottsdale from Palm Springs hit a dust storm 219 held the road like you wouldn’t believe while others were struggling. Semi was blown over not too far ahead, quickly reacted circling around it - fabulous vehicle!

LOVED my 2002 RWD e430. Traded it in for my 2008 s550 4MATIC. I made the swap because I needed front and rear brakes, some type of a sensor I do not remember and because the rust was getting bad. LOVE the S but never ever had a bad day in the E.
