New W221 owner saying thanks
Thanks to all the valuable insight gained from this and other forums, I am proud to join the W221 ranks. i could not have become as reached this state without the knowledge you so admirably share. Thank you.
Purchased what I think is a very nicely appointed 2012 S550 4matic: P1 P2, Designo Black Mocha paint and Sand interior, rear seat pkg, B & O system, new tires, brakes, dealer serviced 1-owner, no accident clean Carfax, under $21k, 97k miles. I did not purchase a warranty for 5-7K (yikes) so its DIY and Indie(s) and the roll of the dice.
Have been a R250 (2007 SL550) owner for 2 years and 4 prior E-Class cars. I have contributed modestly to the R230 forum and hope to do same in W221 forum in the future.

I would have loved to experience and hear how the B&O system sounds in the W221 S Class...problem is here in Australia I have never ever come across a S Class that had that system optioned in it!
Perhaps that option was never made available to the Australian Market??

2007 S600, 2007 Chrysler 300 SRT8, 2000 C5 Corvette, and 2017 Mustang GT, and just got a 2023 300C
Similar experience. My extended warranty was $5800 for 50K more miles and 4 years starting in 2019. I spent about $12K on repairs since then and about $8K was covered and reimbursed. They declined to further extend it when it expired last year. It was a great deal for me. They wouldn't cover some things. Paid for a new transmission but not a new torque converter. Paid for a bad control arm but only covered half of the alignment (how do you do a half of an alignment?) Covered the rear valve body of the ABC but not a split hose (I think that was simply a bad decision). Covered a radiator but not the hose (considered a maintenance item).
Personally, if I bought another used Mercedes S class, I would also buy another extended warranty.

I had two front air springs and fiberoptic cables replaced on my '08 S550, I was on track to come out a head of the extended warranty coverage cost until someone hit me on the freeway and totaled the vehicle.

I have put 30k miles on the car and it runs perfectly, everything works as it should. The Designo leather looks new, no cracks or wrinkles.
Beyond the normal Service items, I have replaced:Motor and Transmission mounts and a front strut, about $3500. I think this is a reflection of 1 prior owner and dealer maintained, I have the records.
The Cost of Ownership on these cars is very inexpensive comparatively. Primarily because of the huge depreciation at year 7 when I purchased, depreciation is only 5-6K over the past 5 years of my ownership. In my case thats $1,000 per year in parts and service and $1,000 a year in depreciation, $2k per year cost of ownership isn't bad. Of course, Total Cost of Ownership would include Fuel (mileage is OK for large car), Insurance (cheaper than new ones) License (cheaper than new by far because of its Value and Age). So while I have my eye on a W223, I struggle with parting with my W221 and that big depreciation.
