Whining noise from the engine bay when HOT

Hi,

I'm driving 2007 V8 63 AMG (M156) with ABC. I have the following problem. After I'll go through a lot of start\stop city driving and the engine bay gets quite hot, I start hearing quite loud whining noises from the front of the car. I'm including the video with sound, so you can better understand what type of noise I'm talking about:

There is no such sounds when the engine bay is cold. Thanks for any guesses and help provided!

Could possibly be an alternator bearing going bad. Hard to say from the short videos. Easier to diagnose in person.

would probably make more sense with the bonnet open than like that

seems very odd boost leak ?

other than that, usual suspects of nasty noises making it sound like a lada are
Drive belt idler bearings fail
Super charger drive idler bearings fail
AC pulley bearing made of cheese
Water pump tends to be noisy
PAS pump makes noises
AC condenser leaks so its low on gas and you hear whines from heater area as gas goes round the system

The sound is actually heard better from inside the car. With the open bonnet it is very hard to localize where the sound is coming from. On another note, there is no sound on idle as well. The intensiveness of the sound tight only to the number of revs of the engine.

1) It couldn't be the boost leak. It is M156 (6.2 liter atmo V8).
2) Drive belt idler bearings fail - Would order a replacement if no other option would be found. However, usually they tend to scream constantly and more when cold.
3) I have no supercharger
4) AC pulley would be replaced if no options would be found
5) It is definetely not a water pump. I have a new unit now: made no difference.
6) Power steering pump in my case is a one piece unit with ABC pump. Basically, according to my research it could actually be not the pump itself, but the damper reservoir. I just want someone to confirm that it sounds like that.
7) AC working fine. No potential issue here.

BTW, I'm asking here for help, because even indie mechanics could not find the reason of that noise and just offer me to start throwing some big $$$ on potentially faulty items.

you could take off the drive belt and see where you are... not necessarily a great idea to then drive but if the car was warmed up and you drove for less than 20 seconds it ought to be OK

one other thought, engine mounts fail (but I doubt it would make that noise)

Don’t like the idea of taking off the belt. It couldn’t tell much more of a story. It can still be any of the components such as power steering and ABC pump, pulsation dumper, one of the bearings, etc. All the suspects. You cannot eliminate a single one with that technique.

Engine and transmission mounts have been replaced 3 weeks ago.

it will tell you loads, completely isolates the:

Alternator
Water pump
PAS pump
AC compressor

its a common trouble shooting solution, and on most mercs should take about 15 seconds to get off and 30 to refit, just don't do it for long, if you still have the noise you need to be looking elsewhwere

I am curious what you find. My S550 has a similar noise that can't be heard standing outside. I was convinced it was my ABC pump at first, but my mechanic is sure it's the engine mounts transmitting vibration through the chassis. Sounds like a bad bearing to me! I can't tell from the video if yours is the same as I'm hearing (and feeling).

Have you been able to find a solution to this problem? I have exactly the same noise at the same revs when the engine is warm (and nothing when it is cold) on a 2008 Mercedes S65 AMG.

If it's a whining noise that starts from about 2k rpm then it is almost certainly the pulsation dampener on the ABC pump.

Mine was definitely the pulsation damper. Unfortunately a common problem if you have ABC suspension.

Mine was worst from about 1500 to 3000 as I recall, but it was very noticeable from just above idle by the time I changed the pulsation damper.

In my case it was a power steering pump pulsation dumper, therefore not an ABC pump issue.

It is a tandem pump. It does both power steering and ABC. The pulsation damper is specifically for the ABC output from the pump.
