Installed billet engine mounts on my s600 tonight

Took 2-3 hours tops. Didnt take pics but this job is cake. I removed the two bolts holding the motor to the subframe, jacked the engine up 3-4 inches as high as it would safely go without having to disconnect anything. To avoid any power steering rack work I disassembled the mounts while they were still in the engine bay. With the rack in the way the whole assembly will not come out. I removed the three E torx from each assembly and it breaks into three pieces allowing everything to come out without removing exhaust or moving the rack. I slide the new mount and other parts back into the engine bay and assemble it all there if that makes sense. Then bolt back to the engine, drop the motor, bolt to the subframe. If anyone doesnt want to do this job on their w221 chassis S600 come see me. Ill do it lol

Is it more harsh now? Seems like mounts that stiff would transmit more vibration to the cabin.

well I spent the last year and half with one mount broken in two pieces. Cruising it seems no harsher. at idle I feel it slightly. but the trade off is not having to change mounts as often.

Are the billet mounts a different size? Could someone do the swap without pulling the engine using stock mounts as well?

thanks

that's good to know. I was under the impression that motor mounts on the W221 were labor intensive

Thank you for the post! I have an S 600 that needs engine mounts but the official WIS procedure is making me anxious because I don't want to disconnect the steering rack. I know there is little space to access the top bolts, how did you remove them and with what tool? I think I will buy a stubby 1/4 ratchet but not sure if it's necessary.

I got to be quite good at doing them in the '08 S-65. They failed annually. I did the work on a hoist. Support the engine via the front of the oil pan with a screwjack. Unplug electrical connector to steering rack. Mark the guy that the steering shaft slides on for re-assembly. Unbolt the steering rack and let it hang. Remove the fastener for the L/F ABC hose to the subframe. Remove bottom bolts for engine mounts. Remove subframe bolts and let it hang. You now have easy access to mounts. The driver's side required a stubby wrench. Failing memory says 13mm. It may have not had OEM bolts on top of it. I got to get the box end of the wrench onto the fastener and use a prybar to add leverage. Passenger side is easy. A second screwjack will lift he subframe back in place. Steering rack is not heavy. Easy-Peasy. Nothing gets stretched or broken. I do them in under three hours. I always laughed at the dealer guys who want an astronomical sum to pull the engine to do mounts.

Is this possible to do without unbolting the steering rack and dropping the subframe? I don't have a lift, only jack stands. I was planning on raising the engine just enough to get the mounts out. Is there a guide on how to unbolt the steering rack?

Unplug electrical connector. Mark pinion shaft for re-assembly.

Pull fasteners that make the pan under the rack. Seems like 18mm bolts.

Unbolt rack. Let it hang from tie rods and hydraulic hoses. It won’t get away.

Rent time on a hoist. Money well spent.
