I had an upholsterer re-cover the center console lid. The faux leather was getting loose. He did a good job with the cover, but after inspection it only opens to the driver side. Looks like he may have put it back together incorrectly. Maybe this is why two other upholsterers wouldn't touch it. He is ordering another lid. Anyone else run into this problem?
I thought it was real leather. I've seen DIY instructions that involve a heat gun to heat up the leather then using a cold wet cloth to cool down and tighten the leather back up. How'd the reupholster job come out, lid functionality nothwithstanding?
Considering that the lid is not meant to be disassembled and is glued together, I think it came out pretty good. The mechanism in it is pretty fragile and gets brittle over time so it could either be broken from age (or slamming shut) or maybe they assembled it incorrectly. I would just deal with it.
Hey OP, was that a local guy or did you send your lid out? I want to get mine done. I'd even mail it to your guy. I think yours looks better than factory. The microscopic stitching flaws say "bespoke" to me, I really like that. It's a personal touch.
Senecat,,, I would hold off for now. He is local. We have been looking for another lid that works correctly and cover that one. He feels bad that he somehow made armrest inoperative. I have a question could the below part be the problem?
Are you sure? I thought all 221's had a center console lid that opened from either driver's or passenger's side, and also from the front to reveal the bigger storage area. In my car, the button to open the lower is visible just beneath the upper button.
Bajaleo,,I only have one set of buttons. One on each side with no tray on the inside. It can be opened from either driver or passenger. Well it is supposed to be that way (not right now though). Driver side button can be depressed but not passenger side. I am really thinking its a mechanical problem. I sprayed WD-40 on the pins front and back to no avail.
konig...Thank you...same info given by Baja. I know my lid does not open front upwards, so no use going to rear ac area. I will fiddle with the settings in your .pdfs.
