So I owned my s550 for 3 plus years and the parking brake worked at first. The car had 156k miles and that time. When I hook up the star to the car it doesn’t communicate with parking brake module. Recently my mechanic checked all the pins coming from the plug going to the parking brake module and it has power and ground.. anyone want to guess what else ur could be? When I press the parking brake button the dashboard and you can here the motor moving.. I am just lost to what else it could be. I am going to end buying the a brand new parking brake unit but want to make sure that I am but missing something else.
Surprise that when you press the parking brake button on the dashboard and you can hear the motor moving but star doean't communicate with parking break. check it out again with star and likely your parking break is water damage.
So the module was cracked open by a Mercedes mechanic when it stopped working 2 plus years ago. We replaced the motor which I bought on eBay.. at the time there was no signs of water damage as the module was water tight sealed by silicone. As previous stated too the Mercedes mechanic checked all the pins going to the module from the car and all checked out fine. There are few forum members that believe like the Anti lock brake pump module it has shelf life expectancy. I found a new oem brake module for $350. I am going to buy it and have installed. At 172k miles this is the only issue I currently have after have a rough past 6 months with all the repairs I had to do with this car.
Parking break fault because motor is bad and motor replacement usually resolve problem. In your case ESP/ABS mudule could be a root cause of the issue. I feeling that most car over ten years also will have problem with ESP and W221 is not exceptional case (I see many W221 had problems with ESP). The issue due to vibration on the engine and it make ESP harness poor contact (such problems happened to all car manufacturers such as Mercedes, BMW or Audi...). What did I do is just open ESP and soldering all harness pins.
below is the ESP pins when opening for your info. Hope it help.
Awesome … I sent out the abs pump module to be repaired to a place in California. My only issue now is parking brake module.. on my cluster parking brake inoperative see manual.
below is the picture of a car which has the same message I have on my cluster.
You need Pico scope tap to CAN wiring to see how CanH and CanL waveform, if picoscope is not available then you need to change part one by one: start with parking break and then center gateway.
the gateway in some ways is like the BMW Vehicle Order (VO) it lists the items the car was built with - bit surprised it will impact its fundamental comms / operation, but I think it can hinder programming
I had my gateway updated and it threw the rear camera in a tail spin for two reasons (note mine is the early aluminium camera not the 2008 plastic one)
1) the new gateway software makes the rear camera come on driving forward !!! and off in reverse !!! - it needs a 2 min software update on the camera after doing the gateway
2) enhanced diagnostic now has a fault - took apart dried cleaned and added acf 50 on circuit board been OK since)
