Trunk closing issues

Had a dead battery and replaced it but the trunk wont close now. Are there any tricks for this ? I cant use the car since the trunk lid wont close. It starts up easily now but trunk stays open. Any ideas ?

Press trunk release button while trunk is open and it may reset the auto close system.

I tried that and it didn't work, I held the button for 10-15 seconds and still nothing. I found that trick in the forum but its not working for me. Thanks

How about another release button? Key fob, door.

Negative. Nothing worked. Took it to the dealer, Need to replace trunk locking mechanism. I guess when the battery died it messed up that component.

that sounds like utter dealer rubbish

the opening and closing is not the catch - guy at work had his 3 series boot refuse to open with the electronic release suddenly not functioning.... on the internet all the forums point to the usual german trick of the earth wire to the boot lid snapping - then it says pull the number plate bulb short one side to ground and press the release on the remote

not saying its your problem - but they build in dramatic faults that are often driven by tiny easily repairable things (when you know about them) - so having opened the boot all he needed was a basic repair on the deliberately stressed earth wire - and why mention that ? - because its the very same fault Merc like to have on their boot lids....

Yes. It is HIGHLY unlikely that something just failed. I had the trunk LED brake light go out on my E55. Took the unit out and everything was fine. Turns out Mercedes can't route a harness properly when motion is involved so the trunk opening and closing stresses the whole wiring harness that runs down the trunk hinge and eventually wires break. I went in there and not only were MULTIPLE wires broken but a repair had been done previously. Granted my E55 was an 04 with ~135k at the time so it had been around the block. But that just seemed really cheesy to me.

I believe the W220 trunk harness was notorious for stress failures.

I would have believed your statement - had I not had to repair the earth wire on the boot lid of my fathers Merc - his was is no way because its routing was accidentally poor - it was 100% designed to over stress a loom with 8" of spare slop - it even had a pointless extension to a trim piece that causes ALL the motion to be applied to a 1/4" section of the loom

Anything’s possible but future reference try detaching/reattaching lock connection, CU, handle switch process of elimination in an attempt to reset. Trunk lock components:

Did you try disconnecting both batteries and resetting everything a second time?
