Mirrors Swing Out Like Wings
I'm new to this forum but have been a learner and lurker since purchasing a 2013 S350 Bluetec last October. Amazing car, rides like a magic carpet and recently got the emissions campaign completed.
Had a weird problem happen the other day that I am unable to resolve with my mirrors. I do not use auto fold on my mirrors. Last week I started the car and both mirrors swung out from where they usually are positioned and swung out wide like wings. I pushed the auto fold button; the mirrors both came in all the way. When I pushed the auto fold button again, they swung out beyond where they should stop again. I rolled the drivers side window down, pushed the auto fold button again and this time I had to manually stop it from going out too wide so I could drive to work. For the passenger side I had to manually and gently push it to a spot where I could use the mirror adjustment toggle for my blindspot; the mirror would not lock into place like it should.
Has anyone encountered this? Any help you can provide is appreciated. I'm thinking it might be related to the auxiliary battery or something I need to reset.
Thanks everyone!
the "fold in"as you drive forwards (aka running someone over, or teaching cyclist to stay over) is usually quite easy to overcome,
the "fold back" as you reverse into something is often much firmer to overcome,
both conditions should be reservable and if done sensibly should cause no damage to anything - its designed to allow this...
on my 221 a reasonable tap will cause it to override its detent and fold in, and it will just fold back to its standard detent by hand - it will go the other way but you have to try much harder,
on my fathers 211 the mirror become floppy and weird and an electric fold in and then out, makes it go back to normal...
it is COMMON on Mercedes cars that have used auto fold for >60k miles for the mirror to wear the mechanism and they then have the issue you describe - whilst it would be possible to repair the parts are unlikely to be available and its not easy
it could well be you need new mirrors - it would be very disappointing to land this condition if you have sensibly turned off auto fold
I would try pushing them to the normal position by hand and seeing if they click into their detent - if not I suspect they are worn out

Hopefully I won't need new mirrors but I will keep researching for a solution.
Thanks!
don't forget
2006 to 2009 got rounded mirrors that look better
2010 facelift got rectangular strange ones
the auto dim drivers mirror glass is hideous money
USA had this penchant for mirrors that are no use to man nor beast - and can have mirrors that show the real size - AKA just about fills the view with half a headlamp and nothing else - European spec cars were normal
If you have the blind spot warning within the glass its even more money
