You can disconnect at the rear hinges. Unfortunately, you cannot open the thing to repair any latches. It's overly complicated and made out of brittle plastic. I replaced mine and the latches on the replacement unit broke as well. I just removed the springs so it stays down.

My console door also does not latch well and pops open periodically. You will probably laugh, but I simply used a thick rubber band as a wedge to keep the door from popping open. Easy enough to over-ride when I need to get inside for something and then very easy to re-insert the rubber band.

Did you just shove the rubber band into the latch hole? There's an overly complicated mechanism in there that prevents the lid from opening in the other direction if the latch or the button is depressed for one side. I took my old one apart to try and repair it but that was impossible. White grease and plastic don't work well together over 16 years.

No, I just wedged the rubber band at the very front of the lid. My lid actually had a small amount of movement when I actually rested my arm on it. Now using the rubber band (I know it is cheesy!!), there is no movement at all when I rest my arm. It actually feels better.

I agree with you the latch is utterly complex and like most of my plastic components is not aging well at all.

I know It is so complicated, but I would appreciate knowing the mechanism of this thing! I removed the armrest lid after a parking valet tried to open it by force which resulted in damaging the latches. now I don't remember how to reinstall it or maybe a replacement.

there are differences in design if you have rear ac, the big bucket is just a shallow tray and the rear is hinged - check videos on you tube - the rear air vents just pulls off, you basically rotate it towards the rear seat squab

anyway lube 4 points to get the lid to stay closed

You should get a replacement lid from eBay if you want the mechanism to work. Then you can take apart the old one and understand that a broken mechanism will never be repaired.
