they like to fill with oil and self destruct because the cam sensors leak and the gunk flows back up the loom and inside the ECU - meant to have been a recall to fit anti-gunk blockers at the cam sensors - you can pop the ECU apart (tease the cover off with a screwdriver) removing from the car and opening in about 20 mins - then clean it up with contact cleaner
and
there was an engine ECU update in week 9 of 2008 it should have got - clean then try to flash that if still no joy get your money out
the ECU comes apart, take out the screws, try contact cleaner and teasing with a screwdriver - heat apparently makes it harder
the engine ECU update you just use dealer tool to update the week will be the same - its just the only one they offer
if you have a decent diagnostic tool - look at ECU data and you may find its on there - it should be if you get an earlier date then its not
I got it off. Opening it up wasn't fun. That silicone is brutal.
No visible corrosion but there are some oil looking spots on some of the areas.
I have attached some pictures. I would appreciate your input.
I bought some Electrical Contact Cleaner but of course I missed the fine print that says "don't use on circuit boards or home electronic equipment". It's automotive electrical contact cleaner from canadian tire. Is this safe to use to clean those spots? Do I need to clean those spots or is that normal marking from the factory?
Thank you BOTUS for all the help and input. Your comments gave me the confidence to spend the $$$ on an ebay OEM PCM and go get mine cloned.
I just got it back and into the vehicle last night......
Immediately I could feel it running better just from the gas pedal vibration being gone... After a couple starts...engine fault code cleared. What a beautiful sight... A cleared dashboard.
Dealership PCM replacement: $5500 (Canadian dollars)
Dealership reprogramming cost: No idea as I didn't even bother asking after the above price was given.
Ebay OEM PCM (tested to the best of their ability): $800 (Canadian dollars... that's all in, shipped to my door)
Local dude to clone mine onto the new one: $300

Nothings cheap but still cheaper to keep her.
Do you know where they got $5500 for the part?!? Looks like it is 'only' about $2000 from the dealer for an M273. I know dealership sometimes come up with crazy prices, though.
