wear and tear

I was looking under the back of the car and noticed two brackets Part 340 in the pic - 221 492 0242 are what the rubber rear silencer mounts fit on - they were almost totally gone through rust. Online people want £35 each and that was the cheap guy - who then wanted £25 in postage from Lithuania....

Just went to main dealer and they are £15 each... the four 8mm x 16mm bolts are £2 each... ordered the brackets, will be in Wednesday, then went to local nuts and bolts guy got six 8mm x 16mm stainless bolts with stainless washers £1.68

whilst waiting to be served, a guy with some Merc whatever needed a front road spring £126 in stock !!! when I spoke to the parts guy, he said, "oh yes, we sell them all day long...." I said, "is the plastic tube around the bottom coils where they break" he said "Yes !!! ", I said, "nice, is the tube to keep the salt water in? that one you just sold was already rusty" - he just laughed

.

Never mix stainless steel and normal (galvanised or coated) steel.
The stainless steel makes the other steel corrode much much faster due to the potential difference (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galvanic_corrosion )
Also never ever use stainless steel on parts that get hot, like exhaust parts.

it wont get hot - there's a big rubber bit there.... you missed that stainless isn't as strong either

That's interesting and something I was not aware of (stainless steel vs other steel parts )

you can use the cadmium coated fasteners instead....no galvanic from that.

With all the corrosion on the MB and electrical issues, maybe we can install 2 sacrificial anodes on the cars to keep everything else from corroding. somehere easy to install and replace...under the rear of the car or engine compartment? will need to be where it gets wet for the current potential to form.

See the brake line corroding issue elsewhere ...sure looks like galvanic corrosion to me...

See link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galvanic_anode looks like 2 are needed one front and one rear.

Any marine engineers on here? Maybe they can chime in..

here's why you need to go buy 2 - one bolt rounded off even with a 6 sided snap on socket - in the end forced a 12mm one on it and just got it off - with corrupt wisdom they used a super shallow head to ensure you have trouble down the road

Merc brake lines are the worst in the world

As for alloy wheels I know a guy that runs a refurb store - he says BMW and Merc wheels are by far the worst of any manufacturer from any other country - they are, 2 years and Merc wheel are ruined - Ford leave uncleaned covered in salt every winter and 15 years they will look better
