steering wheel button replacement

So for $30 on Amazon you can get the 4 button set for the steering wheel. The listing says you just need to pop out the old ones and press in the new ones, sounds simple. Has anyone tried these?

Pop them out is a bit of an understatement. From memory they're screwed in.

Unless they're physically damaged, they do clean up but it takes effort. Don't use solvents on them.

My go to is foaming upholstery cleaner on a microfibre cloth.

Can confirm they are screwed in. Airbag off job.

I installed them a few years ago. Still look good. But the airbag has to come out. Two hints:

1. Be careful with the tiny screws. They do not allow unlimited cycles of loosening and tightening.

2. The chinese buttons rattled, which was annoying. I had to pull everything apart again and used some flexible sealing compound along the circumference of the buttons inside of their little casings. That quieted them down.

It makes it easier for undoing the screws that hold the switches in place.

Put another way, do you really want to risk dropping small screws into the steering column?

FYI, Amazony sellers of aftermarket Chinesium may not be exactly forthcoming in accurate installation information.

Yes the covers pop off, but having broken half the clips the new ones definitely won't fit or stay put. Take the switch out as a unit and strip and clean it carefully and refit it... Net result is functioning switches that look good and functional correctly without having to buy stuff that's just going to be disappointing.

1. Absolutely. And without them the switches will basically become unusable.

2. Let that be a lesson. For the work involved, you should have stripped, cleaned and reassembled the originals that didn't rattle.

Just because you can, doesn't mean you should 😉
