Unless they're physically damaged, they do clean up but it takes effort. Don't use solvents on them.
My go to is foaming upholstery cleaner on a microfibre cloth.
1. Be careful with the tiny screws. They do not allow unlimited cycles of loosening and tightening.
2. The chinese buttons rattled, which was annoying. I had to pull everything apart again and used some flexible sealing compound along the circumference of the buttons inside of their little casings. That quieted them down.

Yes the covers pop off, but having broken half the clips the new ones definitely won't fit or stay put. Take the switch out as a unit and strip and clean it carefully and refit it... Net result is functioning switches that look good and functional correctly without having to buy stuff that's just going to be disappointing.

2. Let that be a lesson. For the work involved, you should have stripped, cleaned and reassembled the originals that didn't rattle.
