I'm going to sit back and see how this first run of W222's goes and if no major problems, then I'll entertain purchasing a '14 before the '15 model comes out. I love the new model, but I do not need all of those fancy options, just P1 package and heated steering wheel and I am happy!

mbI agree in that people will have MAJOR buyers remorse when all the 2015 S owners will inevitably posting away at how the 9G is finally a transmission fit for the advancements of the W222 (or any M-B really, I drove a CLS550 and the tranny just felt like a huge wound on the car to me). '15's will also get HUD which I'm sure M-B will make look cool on the S Class.
What's ridiculous is that M-B is releasing their most advanced car since the last S Class launched and waiting one year to put an all-new tranny in it along with new tech. I can understand 3-4 years later, but that's simply not cool to do to early adopters ("early adopters" is way far fetched even, we're talking people getting a first year model when the NEXT year will get these fundamental improvements to pivotal areas i.e drivetrain) about to splurge $110-$130K on them.

Anyways, aside from the 9G-tronic, the HUD and a touchpad(?), any other rumored improvements to MY15? I need something to help me make my mind up one way or another...and probably soon.

Yeah, it's unfortunate. It's an S Class, it costs a lot, it's marketed as the second-coming, it should come fully-ready in year one. Or at least no big changes for a few years so early buyers don't get royally screwed with a dated transmission and maybe a lacking tech feature or two.
I've just heard about those two things, not sure if any other changes will happen so suddenly.

current 7G+ transmission is garbage, not as bad as the first 7G but still light years behind the ZF transmission. There has been talk about the 9G for many years, they should have unveiled it in the 2014 S-class

Unfortunately, the marketing and manufacturing processes are not always in sync. While it makes all the sense in the world to have had the 9G in place, there may be issues not yet resolved in how it fits with the rest of the car; issues that would have necessitated the delay of the whole model. Also, do not discount the possibility that there is a whole inventory of 7G transmission that may need to leave the books. Not to mention the fact that drawing these out "prolongs" freshness of the model. Let us face it, substantially all people that are irked at this development are members of this and other forums. The average Joe Mercedes out there could care less and has no idea that he is missing two speeds.

This is true. I am the "typical" average joe Mercedes buyer, and I had no clue about this transmission swap in 2015. Speaking from a high lack of knowledge in all the technical details here but....my only thought about it is that I would lose some gas mileage. As far as how the gears shift, that's something I don't think I (average Joe) would notice.
But my ignorance here is prominent...

If you are waiting for the latest updade to buy, you will never buy a MB. MB cars are all a work in progress. Every year the new car is better than the last. Dozens of changes are made that are not apparent to the general public on every model. I agree that the original 7 G trans was problematic. I had the first one in my 04 SL500. They replaced it at 3000 kms.
That being said, I am now driving a CLS550 4Matic and I find the transmission perfect. The main reason for the 9 G is for better fuel efficiency. The 7 G would not stop me from buying this new S. I wish i hadn't bought a new car last year otherwise I would be in line to order this new S. I love all the new generation toys that make this car unique.
Something else about the S class is that it is distinctive. You know it's an S whereas BMW have only one body style in different sizes. It makes their car very generic. If I am going to spend 120K for a car, I want it to look different than the 50K model.

I guess you must not be a fan of the SL than (almost interchangeable with the SLK), or your CLS coming up (as the CLA will look like a mini version of), etc. etc. M-B is unfortunately catching on to the "same size different length" model as well.

Fuel mileage is not critical for me, but more gears ahould improve accelleration and shave another .2 to .4 sec off. That's a good thing, but rolling fast at 1200 rpm is actually not interesting to me. The engine has no torque at that point.
While several here are complaining about the 7G tranny, it was interesting to drive a C300 loaner until our replacement SL arrived.
The shift pattern was completely different and not particularly well matched to the engine IMO. I think that some of these very different opinions may be due to that fact.

I am willing to bet a few things in regards to the S Class and the proposed changes coming for the 2015 MY version (the transmission and the HUD). 1) Most are leased vehicles and the buyer doesn't care because it will be traded in next year for the new model year anyway; 2) The people that actually purchase the car, the ones that can truly afford the car, will buy the new model if the upgrades are upgrades they desire... There's quite a difference between scrimping together to get the barebones model and having it be just in your price range and truly being able to afford something... They don't offer the rear seat package because the owners are driving the vehicle...

There are 18 months lease for the old model. 24 and to some extend 30 months leases are the most used ones with dealers pushing replacement cars 3-4 months before lease end.
For practical reasons it makes the most sense to wait until early 2014 to get better deals and cars with all available options.
IMO, neither the 9G tranny or some HUD will be deal killers or reasons to wait on these leases. New options will always come with new model years. I expect very little "lease/buyers remorse" from the typical S-Class buyer.

0-60 is way overused as a performance standard...
