JUST saw a black one with no chamo driving. It was FILTHY. It has a very distinct proportional size and vibe of the W221 with the same crashing/broken side lines from the CLS. The rear chrome bar also really stands out in a way that didn't look very integrated to me. The grille is almost comically HUGE but very round and not as angled or mean as the pre-facelift W212, it does have a presence up front certainly though, "futuristic-ish" but can also blend in if needed. The sides and back have more of an "anyMB" presence though, save for the size. That's my impression.

Many seem to agree with you, Kratos, so I think you're onto something.

The one I saw was seriously filthy, like car-that's-been-left-in-an-impound-for-years filthy, so that may have played a part. The car kind of walks a line of understatedness, to where you won't really look twice from the side or rear, but then from the front you can't help but notice that insanely wide grille and LED pattern wrapping alongside the sides of it. It has a presence when it's coming towards you but one that's much different from the W212 pre-facelift (I use that comparo as they're two of the rare modern M-B's who use a traditional luxury grille).

You may be right on the side profile, I'd have to see that in person. I spend so much time looking at the front, I haven't notice much else......LOL

LOL. Yeah in person that'll probably play out as well. I just have a stronheaded issue against M-B's profile treatment these days, ever since the worse-offender CLS (clashing reverse-wedge lines that abruptly end nowhere, leaving for un-catered to rear quarter panels on what are inherently wedge shaped architecture profiles even down to door handles that move in a wedge like form right above [not even integrated into] a character line that is going in a totally opposite reverse-wedge direction. It just clashes to me and even on the S as I noticed today, it makes the car look less elegantly long/sleek and more shortened/stubby (as perceived on the CLS) as you have a multitude of lines that get either broken apart from each other and/or don't integrate the entire length of the body.

Mind you these are my own opinion which I have been beating the drum on ever since the launch of the CLS, but I immediately noticed the same effect to myself from the S today. Some people may love those things about it, who am I to judge them for it. Just thought it was interesting I saw the new S and how the design came across to me in the flesh, finally.

BTW as for the front, when it's driving towards you the headlights almost look as if they're squinting, with the large grille giving an impression that it's "bending into them". When the headlights are off they look quite large-ish, but when on, the way the LED tube is positioned, it makes the headlights look smaller than they are.

Hmm. Not quite...

While RR likes to state that only 20% of components are shared with the 7 series, it is fuzzy math as it is based on part number count.
Taking the core engine, the suspension (using the F02's rear air suspension also for the front), most of the F02 electronics and the chassis platform itself makes for more than 20% of the actual car. Of course they exclude the ZF tranny which is also shared, but obviously not exclusively.

Clearly things are modified for each model as it is a shared platform after all.
Nevermind that the car's body itself is manufactured at the BMW plant in Dingolfing.

None of this makes the Ghost a lesser automobile, but consider the visible stuff the RR part (nicely designed by BMW engineers).

That said I wish that MB will step up their 600 or Pullman model another notch.

Update......well the pricing I got from the dealer is still not solidified. Amazing to me that this car will be here in a few weeks and Mercedes has not released pricing to the dealers yet......absolutely blows my mind.....

Thanks for the pics LETO. I enjoy the "real world" pics a lot better than the professional photos. I really got to see that I'm glad I stuck with the 20" multispoke rims over the standard AMG 5 spokes. The "plus one" wheels work better for this car.

Kratos- Those photos were taken by my friend whose blog it is at the training event MB had yesterday. He also has an S class page with links to a lot of stuff peppered on the web related to the model.

Your build with the 20" wheels and upgraded leather should make for a fine car. Considering the car IMO looks great in the pics.

I know it was stated that pics of a more normal configured S were not available on the internet. The car in the pic is what you are most likely to see on the lot.

I was gonna wait on the "lot" cars, but felt that I had very little chance of finding that awesome jaw dropper that fits my preferences. In fact, my wife claimed we would never find one on the lot. She convinced me to go the ordering route.

Comparing the graining and stitching on the leather on the dash in the Ghost to the S, I'd say the S looks higher quality. The console also is too deeply grained and looks like nasty cheap vinyl on the Ghost - especially compared to that stitching on the S.

Idk. To me the monotone S interior pictures with no extra fluffy options almost start to look kind of "cheap" in how basic and lazy-boy they can come across (lots of plastic look as well). There's just so many empty and flat surfaces on the black one pictured above, IMO. That lower console area with the wooden door and then (I'm assuming) MB Tex all over around it, then the plastic indented area with the buttons just doesn't look worthy of M-B's claims of "going upmarket to challenge Rolls Royce/Bentley".

Also, the W222 appears to use the same headliner in the W212 which IMO is a pretty cheap/scratchy feeling texture. Porsche 911's and BMW 6 Series' with M Sport Package come with alcantara headliner, I'm surprised that M-B wouldn't apply something like that on the W222.

Now that I look at it, if you're talking about the Ghosts lower console side surfaces (i.e what's on the side under the wooden/aluminum door area) then indeed that does look cheap. Is that just bare/textured plastic (i.e not even coated over like the W222's with MB Tex as even though it's also plastic, the way it's presented and stitched gives the impression and even almost feeling of leather).
