I think they just heat it up a little and then pull it off. I have also heard of people heating it up and sliding dental floss under the letters.

In any event, I agree, let a professional do it, but not a major undertaking.

Clearly, customizing any car including a Rolls, Bentley or Ferarri is no big deal either. Anyone with money can do that too.

Point is that customizing Lovins S550 took more research, effort and patience on his side than if he would have purchased any of the cars listed above. Mercedes doesn't make custom builds that easy.
This can also be in no way be compared to your standard pick list order from the dealer/online that anyone else is doing.

It's cool to have one of a kind car even if due to interior/exterior options. Very subtle, classy and for him to enjoy.

Glad he shared the process he had to go through.
OK guys, it appears that I have stepped in it, so I'd like to set the record straight:

First of all, I sincerely apologize for the "get a life" thing I said. It's not for me to follow something like this nearly as closely as many of you did, but I was out of line to make light of it. If so many of you folks find this so utterly interesting, informative and entertaining, who am I to judge?

As far as the car goes, it certainly is lovely. I wouldn't have ordered it that way, but most folks here probably wouldn't have either. I congratulate LM and hope he enjoys his new ride.

As for my new car, the "customization" I would have loved, is not something MB is willing to do: I would have loved a new S550 without the Panorama Roof, without run flat tires and with a jack & spare hidden in the trunk. All that said, I do not think I would have paid what LM paid for his custom order to get those things. I will deal with these three issues the best I can and live with them.

So, I still don't like black cars. I still don't like interiors that are half black and half another color. I still think that the cost to build this thing was way off the charts and a waste of money, but that's JUST ME and I do apologize to anyone I may have offended with my previous remarks.

May we all enjoy whatever it is we are driving, as much as LM is enjoying his wonderful new car.

Merry Christmas to all,

Streamliner

I'd just like to say that this thread has gone entirely too long. I think we're all over this car and it's time for LM for order another one and start another thread. I'm thinking the new Mercedes-Maybach is in order. So, LM if you could do us all a favor, please run down to Howard St at your next earliest convenience and order another car. <tongue firmly planted in cheek>. Seriously, one of the most beautiful cars I have ever seen, and in my business, I've seen them all.

If I hadn't changed the front grill, I would have less of an issue debagging my car.
That might be true but don't 600s not have the AMG sport package? I wonder why they do not offer it. I think they have it on 600s in Europe. Anyway, beautiful car.

This is actually a good point. They don't offer it in the US and I hadn't thought of that.

I went on the German site configurator and you are correct that the S600 does come in what they call the "AMG Line."

I thought it was to do with ABC or wheels or somethin. Maybe US customers do not want to think the 600 is a "sporty" car. Or they don't want it to look like most 550s. But still if I was ever a 600 buyer, I would get the AMG package. I have tried that configurator, not as easy to use as MBUSA.

That's very gracious of you to apologize as you did. It's sometimes difficult for one to admit that he made a mistake. Good job!

Now go an sin no more my son.

Lovin,

Showed your car to my buddies on my trip upstate this weekend. We are all in agreement..... "WOW" was the word that described. They had a very easy way to compare.....since they have been in my car 1000 times. Yours is unbelievably impressive! A big Mazel Tov to you!

Question for ya- they commented about it in my car, so I wanted to get your thoughts - and everyone's thoughts who have the new S Class.

Is the back seat smaller? Everyone has told me "it feels slightly cramped" and I wondered if everyone thought this?

Thanks, and yes, I do feel the back seat area may be a bit smaller. I was just looking at this yesterday when I was playing with entertainment center. I am not sure if it really is, or if it just feels that way given everything that is back there.

I am not sure if its the screens, the fact that I have the plus package and only two seats, but the distance to the front seats did seem to feel less than my W221.

The other thing that I noticed and was wondering if others had the same experience, is that no matter how hard I try, I can't get the right rear seat to go back as far as the left rear. In other words, when they are both fully retracted, the front of the right rear seat comes further toward the front than the left rear. I just assumed this was because of the footrest but was wondering if others found this to be the same in their cars.

Hope you had a good trip upstate.

I agree. There seems to be less rear seat leg room in my '14 S550 4matic as compared to the my W221/MY '08 S550 4matic. I do not have the screens in the back (I also do not have the rear seat pacakage) but I do have the Warmth & Comfort Package that comes with the adjustable rear seats. This was very noticeable to me right a way since in the '08 it seemed to be like sitting in the back of a Maybach 62.

I also have the TVs in teh back and it def takes some room out. It's difficult to really measure - but for sure it feels smaller - or "cramped" but not cramped. Plenty of room. It just seems the way the front seats are shaped - they are angled very curved so it cuts into the back seat room. It just feels less roomy.

I really have to figure out how to measure it because after 4 people said this car feels "tight" in the back seat - I'd like to send a message to MB USA / Germany just to say its something they should consider for the W223.

Lovin - what are your thoughts on the ride? With the runflats / on 20s.

Anything you would change about the car if you were asked by MB to give your opinions for the refresh?

The only thing done at the dealership was the front grill.

I am taking her on the highway tonight for the first time. I will get back to you on that expereince. For street driving, I really don't notice any difference until I go over a bump or road imperfection. That is where it seems to be rather harsh. I am just wondering how much improvement one will get with the conventional tires. I don't remember it feeling so harsh in my W221.

The first thing I would do, as I realized this after another member asked me about it, is that the rear entertainment system still does not take Blu-ray discs. I suspect this is more of a wiring issue than just the player, but I think this upgrade needs to happen.

I think the silver buttons below the controller could be upgraded to something of a higher quality. They are nice but I think there is room for improvement.

Also, I don't know if this is an issue with just my car, but the back up camera display looks rather dark to me. I know they had an upgrade for the 360 camera for problems at nighttime, but my car would have had that upgrade being a second half-year car. Does anyone else notice this?

Nothing else comes to mind just yet but I am still very new to this car. I am still in the honeymoon phase.

Beg you.....switch to Dunlop Sport GT Max which is the approved 20" tire for our cars. Seriously - you will thank me. I promise - or I will personally buy you dinner!

chucky: you like them better than Michelin? I have 20's coming and had planned on Michelin.......tire size 265/35.....

LM: loving the car I'm sure!! I was in a '15 yesterday at the dealer and the backseat was a lot nicer than mine: rear climate control, TV's, leg rest.....but no heated seats

Not sure about the Michelins. Was only allowed to switch to the Dunlops and still keep my warranty through the dealer. Couldn't be happier with them.

I have had only amazing experiences with Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 in the past - so if you are getting those - You'll be happy.

You have 19's which come in the Michelin Pilot. The Dunlops are for the 20's as Michelin does not have that size. If I had a choice, which you don't with the 20's, I would go with the Michelin Pilot Sport PS2. I understand everyone also really likes the Dunlops.

I would definetly recommend the pilot super sports they have a very good wear rating and stick like glue. They also perform very well in wet weather considering they are considered a summer tire.

true, been using Michelin since 2010 with no complaints

mine came with/still has currently Continentals which are okay; but I'd prefer Michelin

Lovin, it sure seems to me that even though yours is brand new and there should already be an upgrade for the back-up camera, I bet that it does not have the software update. You will see a world of difference at night when backing up with this software update. I have mine done a couple months after I purchased the car and wow. I could now see what's behind in the dark me very clearly. I would not hesitate to ask the dealer about this problem. It's an easy fix.
