NEW S COUPE--THOUGHT IT WAS AN ACURA!

I saw one of the launch S550 coupes on a dealer showroom several weeks ago and even though it wasn't me, I thought it was pretty nice, especially the interior.
Today, in a parking lot, I am walking towards this black car, and it is not computing. Is that a new Acura? Finally, I see the star and realize that it's a new S550 coupe. Sort of a Plain Jane, black/black, no Sports Pkg or fancy headlights. I have to tell you, I was not impressed. I am no fan of Sports Packages, but this coupe truly looks HOMELY without it. And those tail lights! Could they get anymore BORING?
My new S550 sedan is growing on me. I still like the W221 styling better, but compared to the new coupe, my sedan is a work of art.

Don't like it, don't buy it... Simple as that... Of course, this is coming from the person who thinks an E Class is a luxury car, so I digress.

I didn't think time applied to where WSH is from...

Interesting - i had an S Coupe on order but switched to the sedan - while i generally really like the overall design (the front better than the back), it daunt on me that the CLA, the CLS, the new C and now the S-Coupe PRETTY much all look alike from the front - particularly the CLS and the CLA.

In addition, the rear seat spacing was virtually non-existent if you are a 6' tall driver. Lastly, the rear, indeed, too plain jane for me as well -

I think the interior is fantasic, the S63 Coupe is fantastic but the base S 550 is very plain.

Agree with op's post.
Comparing the newest sedan (which is nice) to a coupe (which is fugly) is like comparing Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

Interior is amazing in both models, exterior on the other side...

The new coupe is an improved implementation of a higher end Japanese wanna-be Mercedes. Catch 22, go figure.

idk, fellas - i spent 2h or so mucking about in one yesterday on an extended test drive, and it is niiiiiiiiiice! such an upgrade over the 216/221. i was set to order a 222 sedan and now i'm on to the 222 coupe. everything about it is such an upgrade over the previous gen. the qwwwality of the materials. the look and feel. the resolution of the screens. christ - i got back into my 221 to go home from the dealer and my dash compared to the new ones looked like the 1950s teles with rabbit ears!!! i, too, was against the rear design at first but after spending some time with the car, ive changed my mind. now the only other hurdle to get over is spending 140 for the coupe instead of 125 for the sedan. is it 140 good? idk. first world problems, i know. ugh.

Gotta agree. The S Coupe aside from its proportions and too-far/show stealing bedazzling elements, just doesn't look too right as a design and proportionally to me, and lacks some soul (maybe why I too have likened it with what a large American or Japanese Coupe can or would look). The rear is especially quite derivative and generic, imo.

Interesting how much tastes can vary. For once I agree with Streamliner on one thing; the coupe NEEDS the sport package. Without it, the car is missing something but that can be said about the last CL as well.
5-6 years ago I walked away from several outstanding CL600 deals because the car looked ridiculous IMO ( sport package was not an option on these). A Coupe needs to look sporty...
I still prefer the S-class coupe over the sedan but am waiting to see the AMG-GTS. Both look like great choices.

+1. My dealer was trying to convince me how hot he thought the car was, until we got to the rear. I said it looked a little like a Buick and he readily agreed. It's the lines as well as the badging placement. Not ideal to me.

Haha. Yeah it reminds me of older huge American Coupes from the rear, and rear side in some ways. I keep thinking "Mercury 90's Coupe" when I see it, for some reason.

The front, as always with M-B's, is the focal point. However, even that I find to look nearly identical to a CLA, etc., just much larger.
