Radar Detectors and Laser Shifters

Has anyone installed a built-in radar detector and laser shifter in a 2015 S550? The only way I see to get around the problems created by Distronics Plus and Blind Spot radar, is to install an add-on from Mid City Engineering. Any other ideas or solutions? What systems have you installed?

I would say just buy a valentine 1 for $400 and call it a day. The nice thing is you can go into the settings and turn off "k" and "x" frequencies. I would say 99.9% of police radar is now "KA". The tech in the s class gives off false "k" readings not "KA".

The only downside to this is most speed cameras give off "k" i don't know if this is a problem for you. If so you can teach (with a little more work) the V1 not to care about the tech in the car.

Again, almost all cops car dash radar and hand held radar is "KA".

I personally run a V1 with only KA enabled. I have never had a issue between CA, AZ, NV with only having KA on.

Curious, do you usually travel on widely used roads, and do you use Waze? How often does your detector pick up on police that was not warned by Waze?

I do usually travel on widely used roads and about once a month a make a trip across state lines using the interstate. I don't use waze I don't think it's needed with a V1. Also in most states if you are worried about photo radar it has like two signs saying "warning photo radar ahead" just pay attention. I have never had a photo radar ticket.

Thank you for your response. However, the police in this area are starting to use Laser, and less and less Radar. They are buying the newer Dragon Eye Laser guns.

Then sounds like you will need a good laser jammer with a good Radar Detector. Word of the wise. Paying attention, not speeding by unmarked cars pulled off the side of the road etc. Will be the best defensive you have. Between paying attention when I'm flying and my V1 tickets don't come. Again, if laser is a problem you will need a jammer. The V1 will pick up laser but it's hard to catch a scatter of laser for any detector.

Oh, and my personal favorite is when I see cars miles ahead on the road breaking for no reason and my wife goes why are you slowing down? Because there is an accident or a cruiser I say and i'm usually always right.

TLDR: Buy a good laser jammer and detector. Then remember no amount of tech will compensate for paying attention and reading the road.

ouch, upgrading to laser? guess they're well funded; in what state do you reside?

I have a V1 hardwired in, I also speed poach whenever possible
although I've heard you have chances of still getting 'caught'.......

I have a 2015 S63 and installed the 9500ci and ALP combo. No issues with distronic, etc. I have the MCInterface, but only for the convenience of running the 9500 features thru the dash. The radar receiver doesn't even need to run thru the MCI. They told me that for the 2014+ S classes, MB changed the way their stuff works and it now doesn't interfere with the radar equipment.

9500 k40?

the 9500 look nice.

what about the K40? I had that in my old car. I was pleased with it but sometimes the warning was late. I wondered if it was the way it was installed.

I would like a unit that picks up radar traps on the highway. Any thoughts on which is best for that?

Really great advice and I recommend combining that with Waze. Just did a 10 hour road trip and Waze notified us of several speed traps. Most importantly thanks to Waze we avoided a huge piece of robber from a truck tire in the middle of the road as it alerted us of this in time.

I wish Waze was built into the navigation system of modern cars. I find Waze to offer better navigation than the navigation systems in our Tesla or Mercedes.

The problem with the Passport 9500ci with the ZR4 shifters is it is "old" school. They will not detect the latest laser guns. Escort does not update, except red light cameras. Every study I have seen shows that the Passport fails with the new laser guns. Looking at ALP, but 3 times more in cost.

Have DISTRONIC PLUS. How do you turn off k & x bands & have only KA? My V-1 will not do this. Appreciate any help on this. Getting too many false alerts.

K Band is used in my area, so it has to be on (TMF enabled does help). I always turn off X band...
