Distronic plus is trying to crash.

Hi All,

Please follow this youtube link:

You will note the car is registering the car in front but is not slowing down enough. Without intervention I would have crashed.

You are using distronic in a situation that actually requires a human brain in the loop for safety.

Well, maybe, but the car is supposed to stop if he has the system properly engaged.

My brain is very well aware that it's a driver aid and not autopilot.

Does your windshield have any bubbles/scratches by any chance in front of the distronic cameras? If so, that would explain it.

You had the phone held in the right direction at the beginning before you rotated it

Hard to tell in the video but seems like a standard driving situation

I use D all the time, never had an issue like this

Try using Distronic with the Distance assistance graphic in the instrument cluster (the one that shows the distance to the car in front). If you don't see a picture of a car in the display or it's flickering in/out, it's obvious that your car is not registering the car ahead of it.

Also, is your distance set too low? I often find that when Distronic is set on the minimum distance, the car accelerates hard and then brakes very hard upon approaching the car. Try increasing the set distance as well. This is most likely the problem...You don't have to change the speed I think because yours is already set pretty low in the video. Usually, if I set a high speed in traffic, I get very abrupt accelerations/braking.

If the distance display shows the car in front and the image doesn't fade in/out, and the distance is set to the max distance and this still occurs, I would visit the workshop.

Chances are pretty low on a newer model like this one with the new steering wheel. Bubbles were a problem for 2014 models/early 2015's.

I had the distance set 1 click from min. The car was registering the vehicle in front, it just wasn't willing to slow. You will also note on the second attempt there's a noise from the brake pedal when I had to intervene. I hope there isn't an issue with the brakes!

You have to set the distance based on the traffic situation. 1 click is good for bumper to bumper traffic. As traffic speed increases you have to increase the distance. If the distance is increased too much you will have other drivers cutting in front of you. At 40 mph and above I set it for maximum distance; that is why it is driver adjustable!

I have Distronic on my E and your car definitely should have slowed down sooner, even if your setting was only 1 click away from the minimum distance. I have mine set at the minimum distance too because even that leaves too much of a gap allowing other a-holes to cut you off in traffic. Make an appointment with your dealer and show them your video.

So 1 click at 65 mph works well, so when would you use maximum distance?

Distronic sets the distance to the car in front in seconds, not in metres or yards. At the minimum setting it is 1 second, at the maximum 2 seconds (never know if some MBs are configured differently, this is the most common one).

Obviously the distance to the car in front is different at slow speed compared to a higher speed. The idea is that you would not need to touch the Distronic dial at different speeds but rather to match the driver's personal preference and then leave it there.

I always use the minimum distance which feels quite generous compared to my normal driving.

In my limited driving it worked great for me even in sudden stop scenarios. Same as the SL...
