The back seat of that 62S listed above....so much more sumptuous and roomy. It is by definition first class airline flying. There was also better materials used - from more wood, leather and just the quality of everything was on a different level. I love steak - so the best comparison is Prime Cut vs Kobe .Both are incredible grades of beef - but one is.... decadent.
Maybach 62S - Notice the chair - you can extend your legs all the way- stretch the - and STILL have room between the soles of your shoes and the back of the front seat.
Mercedes S600 Maybach - I've sat in a few of them - you are most def touching the back of the front seat if you are more than 5 8 .

I believe MB and other makers have artificially inflated the price of their 12 cylinder cars, just to keep them exclusive. They know that folks who want the top line car, for the most part, don't care about the price. I think in reality, an S600 shouldn't cost more than maybe $15K or $20K over an S550, but the price is to the moon, because people will pay it.
The pre-owned market bears this out too, as the cost difference between S63 and S65 shrinks considerably; as badly as the S63 depreciates, the S65 is even worse despite its relative rarity.
It sounds like in MY18-19, Mercedes will (wisely) further separate their AMG models by going with the small displacement V8 in the 63 and a new V12 in the 65; the latter is overdue for updates and should easily reach 700hp, with additional headroom for tuners. The V8 will of course be the fully boosted 4L from the E63S with about 600hp, probably not much more power to be had without sacrificing long term relability. I assume similar changes will be in store for the S550 and S600/Maybach over time.

If it weren't for the fact scenery was passing by I'd never have known it was moving.

I think the S550 Maybach is so post to replace the 57s because the 57s was more of a "divers" Maybach rather then the 62. The normal S550 already looks like the S600. If you're spending those kind of prices you want the biggest and the best. The S600 Maybach is going to be it.
