Question Rough downshift 2014 s550...

Anyone notice as you are slowing down for a light or stopped traffic, as the gears step down, it seems to be a bit abrupt from 5 to 4..... 7 to 5 is smooth as silk, then 5 to 4 seems way more aggressive and you can feel the car slow way faster as if you are pressing on the brake more.... Any TSB's or updates? Or is this just normal for the 7-Speed?

Try a transmission reset

If you have KEYLESS GO do not remove the Start button.
1. Press Start button twice. This sets it to key position 2.
2. Floor gas pedal for 10 seconds.
3. Press Start/Stop once. This turns it OFF.
4. Release gas pedal and wait two minutes.
5. Then start the engine and begin driving.

Wow, that was a quick response!!! I belong to 2 other forums and they have poor activity.....

Will try that tonight! Where did you get this information from? Not much out there that I can locate. I'm also trying to do an oil change reset, cannot get into the settings. I must be doing something wrong. I am always under the recommended millage, so I do 2 oil changes a year.

Any assistance on that? Thanks again for the response. I just set this forum to my favorites so I don't loose it.

You won't be able to fix this problem; in brief a well we'll known problem with the 7gtronic which is used in many Benz models ... Very little by way of a fix and few like me pursued aggressive buy backs and some resolved the issue with dealer applied software updates

Found this update.... Could I be the 1 in 900?
Service Campaign 2014060002 JUN14 – Transmission & engine control module software update will optimize shift quality during coast down shifting. Dealer will update. Approximately 996 vehicles affected.

I'd like to resurface this thread to see if any other users care to chime in. My 2015 is having the same issue described in the first post here (rough 5th to 4th downshift only, no other shifting points up or down are harsh). I already went to the dealer around 3 weeks ago and had the updated software installed. It worked better for around 5 days and now its back. I really dont want to reset the transmission all the time as I don't think thats a fair solution. Car goes back to MB on Wednesday. We will see what they say.

Have had the same issue on my 2015. I had it into the dealership a couple times even rode with the service manager during which of course it didnt do it.

They couldnt find any codes just updated the software and or did the reset.

I have just learned to live with it although at times it feels like the transmission is going to fall out.

Its worst when the car is cold and if i am going around 40 and go up am incline when it will downshift from 5 to 4.

If i put the car in manual and shift from 5 to 4 its not as harsh.

Its main thing i do not like about an otherwise great car.

Definitely less pronounced when the car is warm. What a shame. My 2014 E class now drives better than my S. Unless I get a lucky drive with no abrupt downshifts.

Quick update. Mercedes called today (again, this is the second drop off for the rough 5th to 4th downshifting in 3 weeks). They did NOT say "deal with it, it's how the car is". They instead asked me like 10 questions and said they were going to contact Mercedes HQ with my responses and chase down an answer. More to come....

How frequent are these rough downshifts? Does it occur every time?

If the cars warm, maybe 1-2 out of 10 downshifts. If its the first 10 minutes of driving, 8 out of 10 downshifts. Most of them are mildly uncomfortable, but still not acceptable. Maybe 1 out of 30 are REALLY obvious and sloppy.
