These sound interesting... article

I've read elsewhere that the new inline-6 won't come to the U.S. for the S-Class though. I guess that wouldn't be too surprising, if true, but imo would be unfortunate since 400+hp from the new I6 would be sufficient for many potential buyers.

There is a chance that the i6 could make it to the US but that may get messy from from a marketing perspective.

The E-Class at that point will be technically inferior to the S but would overlap the S-Class pricing (with the P3 package)

I haven't seen numbers, but I imagine that a large fraction, and possibly a large majority, of US 7-series sales are of the 3.0 liter I6 740i, which has a 'mere' 320 hp. Maybe MB USA should take the hint. They could call an I6 S the S490 or something like that, in the US.

You could but it would make zero sense. You dilute the S-Class brand for no reason. MB has been there before and they are much better off brand and margin-wise starting at the 550.
They make more money selling an upscale E than a downscale S.

The BMW 7 is a bad example anyway. It's selling poorly and it's a money loser. Half the margins with twice the discounts of the S-Class.

400 pounds lighter.

So 320 HP 7-series is equivalent to a 352 HP in a S-class.

The new MB I6, is supposed to be 408 HP and 500 Nm, versus 320 HP and 450 Nm for the 740i, so despite the weight differential, a 2018 I6-based S ("S490" or whatever) would be very competitive performance-wise with the 740i.

This C&D article provides alot of into re S-Class engine plans. Among other things, it says that the U.S. will indeed get 6-cyl S-Classes. An S450, initially with a 362 hp V6, and eventually the new 400+ hp I6.
