S63/65 “OVERPRODUCED” says Automobile Magazine
Finally, a car magazine writer who isn’t afraid to tell it like it is. Take a look:

And yet they sell like hot cakes.
Realistically, these are standard cars that have a hand built engine and an uprated (not upgraded) suspension system.
It is sort of like Ferrari. With a Ferrari, you buy the engine, and they trow in the rest of the car for free.

You sir, repeatedly denigrate other members of these forums for their views and try to pass yourself off as the ultimate authority on all things automotive. The term “overproduced” was the term used by the writer of the article. Not overproduced as to numbers, but perhaps OVER DONE might be a better term. The writer was trying to make the point that, in his opinion, the standard, non AMG S560 4-Matic has plenty enough of everything good, in just the right quantities and is thus, the better choice over the AMG S Class alternatives. Everyone else who actually read the article surely got this point, but you had to jump all over me, because that’s what you do. You mouth off without really understanding anything and to my way of thinking, that makes you a bufoon. Forgive me for saying so, but you should learn some manners and also when to keep your mouth shut. My apologies to other members, if you feel I have been too severe in my response, but I’ve had it with this guy.

Back on topic....
I think there's a time and place for each model. If I was going to drive roads as he described (bad) and not be able to get the car past 55 the S63 and 65 are
handcuffed and "overproduced" for this scenario. Get out on the open highways and decent roads then nothing wrong with a little extra snort.
It still comes down to what works best for you. If the AMG's are out of the budget then it really doesn't matter and makes your choice much easier. For the guys that can afford and want the extra the AMG's offer then more power to them (pun intended) and hopefully they'll enjoy every moment.
Nice to see a glowing review of the S class.

Likewise you constantly post misinformation all over the site and it causes constant confusion everywhere. You don't even know what the writer of the article was trying to say, but you're quick to post it. Hilarious. He didn't say nothing about the car being overdone or overproduced in numbers/production wise. You don't even know what he meant so what are you arguing about? Honestly. Guess what, the knowledgeable members here have been sick of your for a while. Nothing to do with me. How can you say what other people understood or got from the article? You're presumptuous too?M

A long lost friend had a saying for guys like this. I never really understood it, but in this case, it just seems so apropos to say “You talk like a man with a paper ***!” This is my last post in reply to anything this guy has to say. Some guys just never seem to “GET IT” and they aren’t worth wasting time on. Happy trails, pal.

I think the article is correct. I keep thinking about getting an S560 (which is why I check out this forum). In an S class I don't want the AMG variant. Or really have much interest in the sport body.
Owning an M278 E550 7g-tronic and M157 E63 MTC I know what the writer is describing. Very similar cars, but the 550 is more than enough performance, and the 63 is in your face performance. As fun as it is blasting a 63 wagon around if I were to replace my E550 with an S it would be S560 (with extended nappa leather and warmth/comfort). It's a luxury car, and I'm sure when I ask it to perform it will.
As I wrote this I thought of a question would I rather have an E63 wagon and an S560, or an E400 wagon and an S63 - I'll take the former combo.

The bottom line is that that S560 is one of the finest automobiles if not the finest automobile available today. The author said as much. I continue to aspire to own a W222 someday.

Agreed. I certainly have issues with the way they market some of their vehicles, and how they equip them, but overall, I believe the W222 to be the best sedan on the planet and something of a bargain compared to other cars in the segment.

The point I was trying to make, as the OP of this thread, is that virtually every automobile magazine writier almost always says they prefer whatever is the hottest, highest performance version of a vehicle. It is so refreshing to see an article where the writer has the guts to say that they actually prefer the relatively “Plain Jane” version of the FL W222 over the AMG models. The man took the words right out of my mouth.

Yes, I agree, the 222's are very good cars, the comfort level of these cars is amazing.

I'm not blown away by my 222 anymore.......I'm used to it and it just seems average........none of the program buttons work anymore, the windshield wipers chatter like hell no matter what I do......the menu makes you wait for anything you need to do.....not instant.......it's these little things that are really starting/continuing to bug me about a car of such 'value' and cost.
