SD Card Limit

I loaded all of my music, 90GB or about 16K songs onto a 128GB sd card and when I put it in the SD Card slot in my 2015 S550 it sees the card but indicates there is no music or video files. When I try it with a 64GB card with a bunch of the same songs it works fine. Does anyone know if there is a size limit on the SD card slot? Thanks.

Check page 219 of the COMAND manual. It has guidance on SD cards and other media.

"COMAND supports up to 50,000 files
from one data medium. For data media with
more than 64 GB, only files in the following
folders are supported: music, pictures, videos"

I also have a 128GB card, but any time I load more than 64GB on to it, I get the same "no music" message you were getting. I'm not really sure what the COMAND manual means by music, pictures, videos folder.

So if I load all of these, it technically should be fine, right?

'94 SL600,'05 SL600,'06 S65,'07 E63,'14 E63S,'09SL600 all sold, ‘15 S65,‘18 E63S,'17 SL65, '17S65Cab
I just had USB's made to hold about 10K songs transferred from original CD's to USB's in .WAV format. Using the .WAV format about 50 songs filled one 64G USB drive. I used the 64G size after hearing about problems some people were having with the larger sizes. We ended up spreading the songs over 12 USB's sorted by Genre. These play perfectly in my 2015 S65 and the 2018 E63S. When I bought my new SL65 last month I found out the SL still uses the NTG4 Comand system which does not support the full resolution, uncompressed music data files in .WAV. So I had a set of MP3 format USB's made. They work fine in all my MB's but compared to the .WAV format when played in the S65 with the Burmester 3D system the sound quality difference is apparent. My USB's were made each as a single folder so I do not know if there is an upper limit on how may folders can be on an SD card and still have the Comand system recognize them.

I'm having similar issues. Have 256GB card with roughly 160GB of mp3 files. Slide the car in...recognizes the car and states no files found.

Fixes anyone?

So I think I have the answer which is shown above but in practice it works.

On your SD Card, you need a folder called "Music". I placed mp3 files in there and lo and behold, it worked. I will next try putting folders of music into the MUSIC folder and perhaps it will categorize as albums.

Will report back.

Second update.

The car does recognize the musics respective folders within the MUSIC folder....success.

Now, does anyone know if and how to "shuffle" all of the music, I'm all ears.

One of them there S cars
RTFM. Page 217. If that doesn't work, here is a simple bash script. This will randomize the files in your folder or folders.

Code:
Code:
location=$1

echo "before"
find $location

for full_file_name in $location/*.*
do
filename=$(basename -- "$full_file_name")
extension="${filename##*.}"
filename="${filename%.*}"
new_name=$(cat /dev/urandom | tr -dc 'a-z' | fold -w 32 | head -n 1)
echo "rename from: $filename.$extension to: $new_name.$extension"
mv $full_file_name "$location/$new_name.$extension"
done

echo "after"
find $location

I'd have done a neat screen recording for you, but the forum software is stuck in the early 2000's and doesn't do modern, space saving video formats like .webm.

Thanks for that Digital Oxygen. Wouldn't even know how to do the coding portion.

Third update...figured out the "shuffle" option. Apparently the word SHUFFLE would have been too easy or low brow for mercedes to use, so they chose to list it as "RANDOM MEDIUM".

To find it, you need to be in the MEDIA section (press the MEDIA button). Next, pull down on the control wheel to expose the menu bar at the bottom...click on Options. Then click Playback Mode and finally, select the bottom option "Random Medium".

This will randomly select music files throughout all the folders in your MUSIC folder on your SD.

Hope this helps.

Select
Select "Options"

Then select
Then select "Playback Mode"

and finally, select
and finally, select "Random Medium".

I had a 64 gig filled up and without thought to reader limitation bought a 256 gig. I put 170 gig on it and did a file re read and it only reads 124000 files, 124 gig. I am wondering if I can use an OBD Reader to flash the bios. I have to convert .flac file to MP3. flac was not working

You can't use an OBD reader to flash the "BIOS" to read larger capacity media. Doesn't work that way.

I have found that the ancient and weak CPU's in car audio systems are terrible at dealing with huge music collections on SD cards. They can take forever to sort/list the content and shuffle is rarely effective either. I gave up years ago and just use my phone. Our phones are orders of magnitude faster since they get updated every year or two.

YMMV but it may be far easier to just bluetooth the music over from the phone....
