Magic Sky Control

Well i have been driving my new S560 for a month, and it is a great pleasure. As i stated before, i got every item possible on my car.

The two most treasured items, where things i did not think i needed, or would think about at all, or use.

The first thing is the Curve control feature, a part of the Magic Body control from 2018 facelift. This is only possible to get on V8, non 4-matic cars. I really wanted Magic Body Control, and went to a lot of effort to get it, as there was no approval for non 4-matic in my country (it is now). It is a great feature. But the curve control is even better, and has a big impact on comfort. Test drive it if you can. I love it!

The biggest surprise was the Magic Vision Control. On paper i was thinking this was an almost idiotic feature, when considering the cost. I was thinking it was worth about 200-1000$, but i paid something like 7 000$. I had finished my order with everything possible, except this. But i was thinking why not just get it, it will be a small portion of the price, and then i have everything, so i added it.

After driving it for a month, what a pleasure to have it. My last car, W212 with panoramic roof, the roof always stayed closed with the covers, because of too much light/heat or tunnels with flashing yellow light. So i almost only opened up the covers when i had passengers, if then.

But this new roof? The panoramic roof is blue, click and it turns almost transparent. I click the switch all the time, several times a day. It is NEVER needed to close the covers. And i get great pleasure from using it. I cannot explain how much i love this small and idiotic feature (on paper). It is a true luxury item, and i love it. It blocks out most of the sun, and all of the heat, at least where i live.

We all want to save some money, even on luxury items, but i am telling you, dont skip this, if you can afford it. It is possible that i would not like this so much if i lived in Florida. I will tell you how it is to use in Spain in the summer, later.

Totally agree. Magic Sky turned out to be something I really really like, during the two weeks I had and drove the car. Quite functional and totally worth it.

In Norway, you got a non-4-matic car? That is quite bold. In the Pacific Northwest, I was compelled to get a 4-matic, which is why I sadly had to say goodbye to MBC...

Funny you posted this because we feel the same way. Our Maybach lacks this option sadly. Our Next One will have it because we often close the shades when driving in the day because the sunroof is not dark enough........

Same with my s63. I had every option and only that and ceramic brakes left. So I decided to get the magic sky and now I can’t imagine a car without it. I never close the sunshade. When I get in my wife’s car, I close it right away now. Ceramic brakes didn’t bother with.

Magic sky is amazing, I get to experience it in customer cars and I always feel like a little kid, I get excited when I see it. Best is on the SLK, the roof panel for a magic sky car costs more than the car is worth after a couple years, but it makes such a huge difference inside the car compared to the base roof.

I agree, on a heavily optioned car, might as well spring for it, it's a super cool feature.

Off it looks like almost clear glass, very light tint. When turned on it's quite dark, like a 5-10% tint at least.

I would say when it is on (transparent mode), it only blocks 5-10% of the light. And when it is off (default block mode), it lets 5-10% of the light through. That is the visual aspect of it. The more fun comes in when you hold your hand close to the glass on a hot day and feel the difference in the heat increase when you turn it on to transparent mode. That is much more valuable in my opinion, and automatically goes to block mode when you turn off the vehicle. Pretty much no need to close the shades...

S-Class is standard with 4-matic in Norway. It took some time to get the regulatory approval, and i was pleased that they would bother to do this just for me. So now everyone can get it here, but i dont think many will buy it.

I use winter tires in cold weather, not all year tire. Add some careful driving if driving on ice, and it will be okay.

Crack in Magic Sky Roof

My S63 coupe has a stress crack in the Magic Sky roof and MB refuses to cover it under the warranty. $11,500.00 to replace it.

Magic Sky in my 16 coupe would get a halo effect under some angles of sunlight...because of this I passed on it when I ordered my '17

First I've ever heard of that happening, have any pictures?

I'd be inclined to assume it got hit by something and chipped, then cracked, and that's why it's not warranty. In that case, I would go though your insurance. It could be filed as a not at fault comprehensive claim, which should not affect your rates, and you will only have to pay the deductible.

Both the dealer and insurance adjuster determined it was a stress crack. No one was even around me when I heard what sounded like an explosion. MB came up with a BS claim that glass is only warranted for 1 year or 12k miles which is nowhere to be found in the warranty booklet. Insurance will cover it, but I do have a 2k deductible. I just think MB is really dropping the ball. There are consumer reports that this is happening with pano roofs on lots of cars, just the Magic Sky is a fortune to replace.

Had to be some major flexing of the car's body for that to happen...although I do remember reading somewhere pano roofs where shattering.

Not really, the glass is somewhat stressed when installed, and yes there are cases of pano roof sections cracking/exploding. Not at all 'common', has happened on a few cars out of thousands with the roof, but this is the first time I've seen one on an S class. Maybe because there are far fewer of them.

The picture posted, it looks like an impact chip about 2-3 inches from the front, before the crack splits apart into multiple?

Yes, something had to effect the integrity of the glass/roof and upon closer inspection it does indeed look like there might have been an impact of sorts...golf ball?

You can always have them do a quality tint on the top. Will block out lots of heat and UV even with the light tint..... Best of both worlds...

Good news about Magic Body Control, because it is going to be available on the new W167 GLE with 4MATIC which I intend to get to replace my '12 ML. That car has Active Curve which I like, but this will be a whole new level.
