Do any of you single guy S Class owners think about a new M5 Competition instead?
I was at the gym last night and a stunning, manly, dark blue M5 Competition parked right next to me while I was getting out of my 7 year old Porsche. I was like... WOW! The wheels were amazing (same ones as the green car below), the color was amazing, it must have been brand new and I thought, just... wow. We talked for a minute, he loved his car. Would I sell my S63 to get one? Is my S63 really sporty enough, 18 months after owning it? I'm single and was single when I bought all 3 of mine, is the S63 still my "style"? Would I prefer this BMW instead? Is this sporty, 4 door, AWD a potential new car for me or ... forgetaboutit? I take friends around on occasion (maybe 2-3X a month) on road trips. They love the back seat and and appreciate the comfort and leg room. The M5 probably is tight looking in the pics, in the back seat in comparison but... should I care?
I kind of care, but how much? Would this M5 be a better image and fit for me now? I'm 58, divorced 9 years and ... looking for the next Mrs, furiously.
I don't know, probably not. Right? I'm a Mercedes S63 guy now instead of a BMW guy (I had 8 BMW's before my 3 S63's - a 1974 2002, 1988 535is, 1991 M5, 1995 540i, 1991 850i, 1995 740i, 2001 740 Sport, another 2001 740i Sport.
Do I go back to BMW now? Ummm, I guess not, but this car was so ME! They are about $139k new.
Anyone else feel like this sometimes? Anyone else lust over a more sporty 4 door of some kind? Or this one?
M5 is a beast, every bit of E63 or more some may argue successfully. However personally I think the S63 is in a different league, you own the top performance sedan out there. I think M5 is a level down. Tempting though, for sure.
Can't speak to a single guys car as I am married but I have looked at getting the M5 in lieu of our E63s. The M5 is not comparable to the S-Class; different clientele and the S is a classier car.
The interior is pretty decent but lower-end, not special and the same as a typical 5 series... On the exterior I find the car quite tame looking and once again, a bit too close to a regular 5 series. The E63s sounds much better than the M5 and the AMG's stand out more from the regular E-Class.
On the plus side, the suspension is softer on the M5 in comfort mode and my wife would appreciate that. The M5 comp is a touch faster than the E63s but they are so close that it's a drivers race.

BMW has definitely stepped up their game. Between the E63S and M5 Comp, I think the interior of the E63S and Mercedes' superior infotainment system make it preferable. The AMG sounds far better too. Performance wise, differences are quite small and if the M5 Comp beats the E63S right now, that will probably change when the refresh comes out in 2021. If the current E63S isn't fast enough, just get an ECU tune.
I don't think any M5/M8 is in the same league as a S63 Sedan/Coupe, the AMG price points are obviously higher and you're getting a lot more luxury and higher material quality in the Benz. I was hoping the new 8 series would be more competitive with the S but alas it was just a rehash of the 6 series. I'm still waiting on a proper replacement for the epic E31/M850Csi !
Different size and classes of cars. I prefer the larger full size car, and the S63 is an amazing beast and far more luxurious. The M5 benefits from its smaller size and lighter weight but cannot do cushy luxury highway cruising of the S class. I also don't trust the longevity of the BMW drivetrain.
The future Mrs will appreciate the S class. It's the boss. The only way you should go from a S63 is to a S65...now that's baller status but I'm a little biased.

Thought provoking comments. Thanks guys. Based on what I read so far, I'm inclined to not do anything then and just admire the M5's from afar. I so wanted to get an Alpina B7 instead of this current 2018 S63 since I'm a BMW guy for the most part, but after looking at them both very closely, from every angle, and sitting in them both for 10 minutes each, honestly, it wasn't even close. Based on looks alone, and that's what I base most purchases on since cars are pretty all veryfast today if they originally cost over $100k, the MB won out easily for me. It was heads above the BMW in looks, especially from the rear, and the interior was much nicer and richer looking. The seats weren't comparable. If there wasn't an S Class, the Alpina B7 would have been in my driveway right now. I loved that car.

Hmmm, a new S65? Um, I'm think about that too ;o).
Look at a nice used one unless you have a quarter million to burn. That's what I did a year ago and scooped up a 2015 S65 with MSRP of $240k for under six figures.

Rear seat legroom is too small in M5.
When you quit looking furiously, you will find your opportunities are enhanced.

We were actually close to getting a B7 but ended up with the E63s. Despite a higher MSRP, the B7 would have been the cheaper car as well but while it ticked many boxes, it still had a few 7 series specific design dislikes that made us pass on it.
The one thing that is worth pointing out in this thread that while the S63 is at a different level than the M5, so is the M5 to the S63 in terms of performance.
B7, 760li, S63, S65 (sedans/coupes/cabs) are all sporty luxury cars and geared towards that audience.
M5, M8 GC, A7 RS, E63s, GT 4doors are all performance sedans with some luxurious bits added in. And while these size-wise placed at the mid-level, they are the highest performing cars of the line-up. People looking for a performance sedan will likely not consider a S63 or B7. To big, too heavy and to some extend, too slow
There is a lot to like about the Alpina B7. BMW has stepped up the luxury feel with the interior. I also appreciate that you don't see many B7's on the road. At least not in my part of the country. Tuff choice between S63 and a B7. (first world problem??)
I think this question is one that most S class owners wouldn't ask. Why? Folks who own an S class are more focused on the comfort aspect of the vehicle (among other things - such as prestige, the S class's presence, etc - whatever floats people's boats). Those who can afford the S AMG range are focused on comfort and speed, but perhaps not handling.
I don't think you'll find a large group of S class owners who would consider a M5. It just doesn't overlap in my mental venn diagram of these two cars.

Had the SL, CL and S with that wonderful V12.
My current daily is a 63 though, simply because of my constant frustration with absolute lack of traction the S65 suffers from on any but perfect, clean and smooth surfaces and such thing does not exist in Chicago.
Add rain or a bit of snow and the car is impossible to use as it was designed to be.
I was hoping MB would finally make an AWD S65 (that would be an absolute monster) but it is not to be, we are getting a hybrid replacement instead (S73)

I considered a number of alternatives before buying my current ‘19 S63 including the M5/M5 Competition.
In May of 2018 I did the BMW car control school in South Carolina and drove all the M cars on the BMW Performance Center track including the M760 v12. I considered the ‘19 E63S and the ‘19 S63. Since I daily drive the car back and forth to the office and shuttle clients in my car, there was not a question for me that the S63 was the way to go. Of course for my daily driver I have had an S Class for over 25 years. The ‘18 and ‘19 S63 is a bit different than prior S63’s It has that wonderful balance between a luxury car and enough performance to satisfy me for a daily driver. My S63 does 3.29 seconds in the 0-60 times and is just a beast. Of course the ‘18/‘19 E63S is just a bit faster but the suspension (for me) is just too harsh for a daily driver. After the AMG Driving Academy Advance class in May 2019, I am now thinking about an AMG GTR as a track car but certainly NOT to replace the S63. I am planning on doing the 2020 AMG Driving Academy Pro Plus class to qualify for an SCCA car racing license. I must be going back to my child hood (so my wife says) since I used to race motorcycles (in North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Montana, Wyoming) growing up in North Dakota.
A number of people I know that race cars drive the S63 as a daily driver. I found out when I spoke with Reini Renger (head of the AMG Driving Academy Worldwide) at Road Atlanta in May that he drives an S63 when he is in the US as well (his S63 and mine were parked close to each other and both were the same color in Ruby Black). Again the S63 just has the wonderful balance with luxury and performance. In my opinion, there is no car in the market that has that delicate balance between performance and luxury dialed in as well as the S63 does.
I drive the 2019 M5 and ended up buying an S560 instead. The M5 was fun, however the build quality was much lower and the engine has a reputation as an oil burner (read not well made). The S560 is an all purpose great car, the M5 more of a boy racer.
