Agree. That’s why I came back to a 222 after owning a 2015 and having great luck with it. There is no car out there as comfortable and with as beautiful int design. The body lines are beautiful too. Sometimes after I’ve cleaned up the car I just sit there admiring it’s nice lines.

It's simple, if you want to drive a car with a nice front, get a 7-series BMW. If you want a nice interior and nice rear, get S-class. In my pinion, it seems like the new W223 is losing the rear but will preserve it's #1 ranking in terms of the interior. The new design/shape of MB headlights for 2021+ models doesn't seem to be that sharp to me. I think anyway it will be really tough to come up with a design nicer than the W222 especial with the AMG package on it, this design is just out of this world.
It's interesting that the consensus here and on the BMW forums is that the latest facelifts of the 7 series is what not to do. Just a bit too big on the grill; the size also feels emphasized due to the closed (louvers) solid look. That said, I really like the more edgy BMW front facia for sporty cars. Headlights look cool and the laser headlights work well. At least they can be coded to work as they should (anti-dazzle). Btw, am not anti-BMW; we have a M8 Competition and they fixed all my gripes I had with our 750 and then some
The W223 is supposed to launch with the new headlights (1 million micro mirrors). Hope they are not removed for the US. Audi will at least just disable the lighting features and then do a software update when they are approved in the US.
One more thing about the front end; Mercedes has found a more elegant approach for it's adaptive cruise (Distronic Plus) radar, hiding it under the star. BMW on the other hand has it visible in the lower air intake.
I do think back of our S550. IMO the W222 has been the best S-Class design by far. It is a stately car with elegant lines which will age very gracefully. Our old ride...

I agree. Many of us here, myself included , can really get wound up over designs, colors, etc. But I believe that this is mostly due to how much most here love the brand and how disappointed we are in the seemingly mediocre direction MB has been taking their aesthetics over the past few years. The cars & SUV’s are so wonderful in so many ways, why can’t the visuals be just as wonderful? That question asked, MB certainly isn’t alone in this respect. One would be hard pressed these days to find a major auto maker with pleasing designs & color offerings across their product lines. There are usually some exceptions here and there, but for the most part, I feel we are currently in the midst of crossing what I would call a design/aesthetics “Gobi Desert,” with not much relief in sight.
To me, the rear of the upcoming, face-ifted E sedan looks like any number of Asian econo-boxes on the road. Unfortunately, it would appear that the new S Class will be following close behind. Both, of course, will probably be available in the exact same, old, worn out, exterior & interior colors. Oh well.

Relative to the topic at hand noticed the horizontal tail lights on a new GL E I think. They didn't look that bad.

Thanks @Wolfman , That's realyl one of the reasons why I think my current W222 would be the only car that I'll plan to keep forever. I love it and I don't think it will age. With the current trend of electric cars, I think this W222 will stand as a unique car with powerful and real-feeling gasoline engine and a standard transmission which I think is going to remain as a unique and more fun to drive in the future. People like me get bored in self-driving cars as I love driving and for that reason the semi steering and lane control (and adaptive cruise control) is more than enough for me on highways!. I can see myself selling any other car I have, but certainly not the W222.

Re. The GLE, I wasn’t sure the tail lights either but we have one now and like it in person with the more shapely rear of the car. Looks decent with the LED layout (once they light up).

The way this picture is taken is to further exaggerate the size of the grill.
In reality, it is not as obnoxious as above, at least to my own eyes.

Ya way too big and the intercooler housings are to big also and out of proportion. The 222 is just an elegant style and the grill size and intercooler housings are not too big. Less likely to get damaged by road debris too. I had 2018 e63 amg and that car was very sensitive to getting damaged by stones kicking up off the highway. Huge unprotected intercooler housings and large unprotected radiator area.

I'm not in love with what Mercedes has been doing with their designs lately, however the BMW 7 front end is comically awful. I understand the market they are pandering to and I wish them success. I could never drive it.

You know, I cannot compare this with the BMW. The Bavarians had tradition and lineage on their side, but they crapped all over it. Genesis, on the other hand and by comparison, is a fledgling maker in the luxury car segment. I’ll admit that this grill is over the top and a bit more than I would like to see, but I think it works way better than the treatment given the current 7. The Koreans are still experimenting. Genesis never built a 507 or a Z8. BMW has and should know better.

The latest info I have, is that orders for the 2020 W222 will be accepted through April. Does anyone know if this would include the Maybach sedans, or do we think that the current Maybach design might continue into the 2021 model year?

Camouflaged Maybachs are seen as often as the regular S models. Given that they look more or less production-ready body-wise, it is very likely that they launch on a similar schedule.
