They told me the engine was leaking oil at the cover, They replaced the cover, and quoted me it was a 4 and half hour labor job. Parts and labor was $1600.

Way more in the Bay Area, my local indy gets $125, the Nissan stealership is $175 I bought pre-paid service so not sure about Autobaun Motors in Redwood City but I bet it is $250.

I will have to ask Autobahn motors guy at some point, but next oil change will be at my mechanic for $140 with sythetic oil and reset of the reminder along with the usual top offs etc. They want $380 at the stealership, I think the last B service I may do at Autbahn as it will be the last time I have a chance to use the warranty for anything they may find, it will be over $800 but would be worthwhile if they find anything. The found a flex plate last time which they did without me asking which was a $1500 repair.

I would think the average dealer hourly rate around the US must be under $200/hour.

My indy runs $150, has the automated diagnostic systems and does excellent work.

Who sets up their labor time, factory? I mean the book might say 4 hours and the tech probably would do it in 1:30 hours yet the customer gets billed full 4 hours, fair? Are there no governing bodies to control these thief's?

Physicians have to document the time or the complexity of the patient and an audit would be catastrophic if they lied and got caught?

What I am saying is, an experienced mechanic can crank up the jobs and so can an experienced physician but the physician has to prove how much time he spent with the patient yet there's no rules/regulations for mechanics?

There are book times for a given job. It is usually in the mechanics interest to beat the book time so that he can make more money.

This is how it works for any dealership or mechanic's shop. If a mechanic couldn't get more work done in less time there would be no benefit to them to improve their skills. Nobody is lying to you, you just didnt understand how that business works.

And no, Physicians don't charge per hour, they charge per procedure and its the same situation.

And my dealer is $210 per hour.

Really thieves?

Coming from I’m guessing a physician practicing in the USA? Pretty bold statement considering how loose and nonexistent the regulations in the healthcare industry are in this country and the things doctors get away with daily. Not to mention the absolute abysmal service and loopholes regular people have to jump and go through.

It seems the only business people get upset at for making a profit are car dealers and mechanics. Every other business gets a pass.

The labor rate here in NYC is $230. $250 at the Land Rover dealer. BMW charges $210. The MB dealer I got my S550 from this year charges $1XX an hour. YMMV depending on location.

If they spend 1 hour, why am I charged 5 hours?

Because the book rate for the job is 5 hours, thats how the job is priced. Thats how it works. You're not paying for hourly work, you're paying a set price for a set job.

If you pay a painting company $4,000 to paint your house, they price the job the same way. They may price in 20 hours of labor, but if you have great painters it might only take them 12. You don't pay less because the people doing the job were more highly skilled lol

Think about it, if you paid mechanics less because they could do a job more quickly, why would they have any incentive to work harder and get more jobs done in a day? If they were going to get paid the same amount if they do 5 jobs vs just plodding along slowly and lazily on one?
