Not Happy With The New Tires on My S560!
Hey everyone,
I just switched my Goodyear run-flats to the Michelin Pilot 4s ( summer performance tires) which apparently is the newer version of the "Super Sport". The overall performance as far as the handling and brakes have been improved significantly, however, the road noise which one of the main reasons for changing the previous tires is almost the same! I contacted the tire rack and they recommend the Michellin A/S 3 ( all season ) instead of the summer performance tires. I didn't go with A/S 3's because:
1. The original tires on the car where summer performance and I thought putting the all-season may impact the performance of the car
2. I live in Southern California and didn't feel the need for putting the all-season tires.
What do you think? Will I get less road noise if I get the Michellin A/S 3? And Am I right about impacting negatively on the overall car performance by running the all-season tires? Please share your personal experience? By the way, there is a 30-day return/exchange policy and I can get the A/S 3 with no problem.
Thank you,

On my W220, I used the Michelin Pilot Super Sport and the 4S. Both delivered incredible grip, handling, and responsive steering in the dry and wet. I personally never noticed any noise, but the mechanic at my local indy shop commented on it once when I had the set of 4S on the car. My only issue with both tires was that they wore extremely quick, but their superior handling comes from being so soft.
I recently bought a W222 and I plan on using an all season tire going forward. I'm located in Texas and while I can run a summer tire year round, the fact that the W222 has staggered tires limits rotation options which will accelerate overall wear. Having a soft summer tire would exacerbate the situation, so I plan on finding a long life all season with good handling characteristics and sticking with it.

I think what you are noticing is the extremely low noise level on the car in general. When the car has such a low noise floor some things just become more noticeable such as wind and tire noise.

I totally agree. The same tire running on a Chevy or Ford product would seem just fine.

Have the Michelin PS4S on my previous car (pre facelift S63) after the first change (from PS3) and on my current car from the start, and I think it is one of the best tires around. Especially no more cold weather clunking at slow speeds (typical for the PS3......) but also very good grip, no aquaplaning, etc. More quiet than the PS3, and then the Conti SC6 on my other car.

Still very happy with my Uniroyal Tiger Paw GTZ all season tires. Nothing not to like about them. They seem to be wearing fine so far too, although only have 5K miles on them so far. Whats not to like about $140 bucks a tire either.

I can tell you that slicks are vastly nosier than treaded tires.
This leads me to believe that the bigger tread blocks of the sportier tires make more noise than the smaller tread blocks of touring tires.
YMMV

I'd try it and see what happens. The 4S is a 'loud' tire I agree. Will your tire shop allow a trial period? I've been using the 4S for a while now and the 'noise'......well, it's not an issue anymore.

My 2020 S560 came with Pirelli P Zeros and they seem to be great, but unfortunately do not have a comparison to offer. Interesting that it seems prior years may have come with Goodyears? If so, I guess I dodged a bullet -- not a fan of those.

In my opinion, “THE” best tire for an S Class is the Bridgestone QuietTrack, but they are not available in every size. I have them on my S560 (18” wheels) and wanted to put them on my SL (19” wheels) but they did not offer them in the correct size. So, I did a lot of research and went with the A/S3+ tires on the SL and the ride is VERY smooth & quiet. I highly recommend them.

I have them (the AS4s) and have logged about 5k miles on them. Wonderful tires in almost every regard (comfortable, great traction, great wear) but not particularly quiet. For that reason alone I would try something else next time.

hmmmm... maybe I'll get DWS06 conti's again, any other winners out there? Quiet and comfy is my biggest goal here, I'm downgrading (or upgrading?) from 20's to 19's and want the biggest bang for my buck here...

I am a Michelin guy myself, that is why I went for the AS4. Their tires have always instilled confidence in me in poor weather conditions. The AS4 is fine, but on a car this quiet tire noise is noticable. Another member on here swears by the Kuhmo Majesty tire which is significantly cheaper and may be worth a try. I had DWS05s on when I bought the car and they were very loud, but also pretty worn (2/32”). I hear the 06 is quieter anyways.

The Pirelli Cinturato P7 Plus tires non run flats are very good and also have a very long service life. I have those on my pickup truck and they are great recently replaced them with the same and got 50K miles out of the originals. I still have run flats on my 2018 S560 and have the Conti Pro Contact GX SSR's. Got 20K miles out of the rear tires and could get another 5K miles but replacing just the rears and the fronts I think I'll get around 35K out of them so another 15 K miles. At that point I'll probably switch over to the Pirelli Cinturato Non run flat tires as the ride will be better and they will last a lot longer too. No major complaints though with Conti's. Just a little more harsh over bumpy roads.

Normally I would go for Michelin PS4 and find them super. I have been reading about the Falken 510 tyre that gets very good reviews ., They are rated at 69db on front and 70db for rear (20s) also have an A rating in the wet. Bonus is that they are also cheaper. I’m strongly considering buying a set of these once my own are worn.

I'm happy with my non run flat Michelin Primacy MXM4s though

Yep you're right forgot about that in the 19 inch size. Guess I'll probably go with the same tires you have at that point but just replacing the rear run flats I currently have will get me another year before I have to worry about changing out all four tires. The conti's I currently have really have worked out better than I originally thought they would.
