"The next step is to replace the door handle, but as it is a painted part, I am reluctant to do so if they can't make an actual diagnosis as to what is the problem.
I am not a fan of just replacing parts, even under warranty."
Unfortunately for me I am one of those people who are extremely discriminating. I easily notice small defects and I don't want to look at two different colored door handles every time I look at the car! If the painted part of the door handle doesn't match exactly, it will really disappoint me. That being said, w/o a proper diagnosis of the problem, replacement of the handle might not fix the problem and instead make it a bigger problem for me.
So far no codes are stored. I thought it might be a loose connection in the connector between the chassis and the door where the hinge is up front, but again, no codes.
As a retired health care provider, I was a diagnostician by profession. You really need to identify the problem in order to get the correct treatment, otherwise you don't get well.
I was just hoping that someone might have some insight here on the forum to help with the diagnosis. If this keeps up, I will proceed with the door handle replacement.
Interestingly enough, the handle seems to come apart. I am hoping we can disassemble the new handle and put my painted part from my original handle on the replacement one.
I guess we'll see.

The quality of our problems...
In an effort to add to the information bank in the forum, I finally figured out why my keyless entry only worked intermittently. The dealer had screwed up ordering a new door handle, the passenger handle didn't fit the driver's door! Luckily for me, I read somewhere on the interweb that our keys go to sleep when not moving to prolong the battery life. I tried an experiment. If the unlock button didn't work, I jangled my key and the door unlocked when I touched the handle in the appropriate spot. I switched out the key I was using for my spare key and that key worked flawlessly. My door handle did not need to be replaced and I requested a new key. Hoping this new key will work the same.......
EDIT: To be clear, it was the key that was defective.
