Stupid tire question ( sizing )

Hi all,

When I bought my 2015 ( non AMG ) sedan, I swapped out the wheels for the AMG version. They came with non run flat tires. It’s time to replace the tires and I want to go to run flats. When I go to Tire Rack, the dimensions of the AMG tires ( they don’t sell run flats for the AMG version ) are different than the non AMG run flat tires.

AMG:
Front: 255/40ZR20
Rear: 285/35ZR20

Non AMG run flats:

Front: 245/40R20
Rear:275/35R20

Can I run the non AMG run flats on the AMG rims?

I know that the ride may be a little harsher and a bit noisier, I’m ok with that.

As always, thank you all in advance!

Steve

Since the tire size are very close between each other, you should be fine if you put the non AMG tire on the AMG wheels.

10mm is basically 0.4" So the AMG tires are 0.4" wider. The question is how much wider is the AMG wheel than the MERC wheel?

You won't notice a thing (at the 99% confidence level).

So you can run the 255/285 tires on the 10 spoke AMG package 20" rim? If so any advantages in doing so?

I have the AMG trim package on my 2015 S550, along with the 20" AMG wheel option with OEM Goodyear run flats, and my tire sizes are what you show for Non AMG tires.

That is because my AMG wheels did not come with the car ( as a trim package ). They came from an AMG car.

Yes ofcourse less harsh ride... even 19 " Pirelli winter run flats were worse than 20" none run flats.

Wheel size is the same for AMG or amg trim so you can put as per mercedes recommendation 245 and 275 or as for AMG 255 and 285.

Runflats are a date of money. I had blow out and they go flat just as quick a regular tire and then ride on their deflated carcass. Problem is how do you risk your rim with driving on a deflated tire. Sound great on paper but in reality was stuck on side of rode waiting for AAA just as I would have been with regular tires. The sidewall collapse so much that its just too risky to drive on even if on paper they say you can.

Didnt think the run flats were bad but when switched to non run flat Michelins the ride and steering difference was very noticeable. But its your car.

I had the the Michelin’s on my s63. I’ve had a lot of issues with them. Ive even had one pop and crack my inner rim. I honestly don’t trust them. Carry an extra rim or get triple AAA. Worked for me

Steve, I have 245/40 R20 and 275/35R20 on AMG rims on my 2016 S550 Coupe. Works fine.
