My new 2020 S560 and the AMAZING trunk space resurrection!

Back in 2018, I took delivery of a 2018 S560 that I ordered. It was optioned IDENTICALLY to the 2015 S550 it replaced, but I was amazed and utterly disappointed at the loss of the “tuck under” space at the front of the trunk area. Here is a link to that thread: https://mbworld.org/forums/showthrea...errerid=168751

Well, fast forward to today, when I took delivery of a new 2020 S560 that I also ordered, but I further optioned the new car with the 3D Sound, Night Vision and Heads Up Display. Other than those three options, the 2018 was absolutely IDENTICAL to this 2020.

So, guess what? The “tuck under” space in the trunk is BACK! How can this be? Here are three photos, showing my compact spare in the trunk. The first of my 2015 S550, the second of my 2018 S560 and the last one of my new 2020 S560. You see, in the 2015 and the 2020, the spare goes way forward, into that “tuck under” space. WHY the 2018 trunk was so much smaller, I guess we’ll never know. Crazy.

Congrats! Any more pics? Unless I missed them in another thread. I'm so bummed about my tiny 2018 trunk. Honestly, it's embarrassing when I travel. My new GF was like "wow, that trunk is small, how are we going to put both suitcases in there?"

Me: "Honey, we're not. One will have to go on the back seat".

ughhhhhh

Nice looking trunk. Any photos of the exterior? Does it have a spoiler on the trunk? Where is @hundolots when we need him?

Stream, I have been on this forum for a while now, and I feel like I have seen all of your trunks, and followed what I guess we should call "sparegate" at this point. How many times have you actually used that spare you are dragging around like a linus blanket?

Good to see the space has been recovered.

I’m bummed they cost cut the metal lift over area for 2020. It’s great for preventing scratches and adds jewelry to the space.

My wife and I travel pretty light, and both of our “carry on” size rollers fit in the 2018 trunk, with the spare, with room left over. I hang a garment bag in the rear seat. That said, the trunk space is ridiculous in such a large, high end car. Worse yet, the trunk in the even bigger Maybach is the same size. The trunk should be about 30% larger, and a compact spare should be properly stowed below the trunk floor. Oh well.

On another note, I opted for only a 10K mile lease, due to the virus travel problems, not to mention the fires up in Napa Valley, our favorite road trip destination. Don’t know when we’ll be going up there again. Our second favorite spot, The Four Seasons Biltmore in Montecito has been closed for months and will not reopen until March at the soonest. Not a lot of road trips planned.

P.S. I could post photos of my 2018, as the 2020 looks exactly the same: silver/black, 18” wheels. Not very exciting.

I would like a spare but are you actually carrying it around like that in the trunk? Isnt there a space for it under the cover? I have to ask what has happened to you that its is such a big deal for you to have that spare and I do not mean that in a malicious way.

The trunk is small especially if you have the power rear seats. I purposely got one without it but it drives me crazy that a $100k car doesn't have heated rear seats as a result of this. That said as a family of four we use the car for travel to Palm Springs almost weekly in the summer and can squeeze everything in.

I’ve posted this before, so apologies to those who have heard it:

”Big Brother” MB KNOWS what is best for us, so they not only do not provide us with a spare, they PURPOSELY removed the space to properly store one, under the trunk floor, where it BELONGS! I keep my jack & tools in there, but my spare has to sit on top of the trunk floor. Thank you MB idiots!

Several years ago, I was driving home from L.A. to OC on the 405 freeway. It was about 6pm, but dark out. The traffic was heavy, but moving fast. I was in my Lexus LS400 driving in the fast lane when I hit an object. I didn’t see it, so could not avoid it. My left front tire, which was a fairly new Michelin, shredded. I somehow managed to get to the right shoulder and I phoned AAA. Before AAA got there, a Metro tow truck pulled up behind me with his light bar blazing. The driver opened my trunk, removed my full size, matching spare (thank YOU Lexus!), changed the wheel and I was home for dinner. If I had not had a spare, I would have been in for a ride in the tow truck, taking my car to who knows where, and would have had to deal with either taxis or a rental car, etc. I would not have made dinner, would have been very inconvenienced and thoroughly pissed off. Having a spare—preferably a full size, matching spare, under the trunk floor, is a common sense safety measure. RFT may handle a simple puncture, but hit something larger and your RFT can shred. Hit the right pothole and you can crack your rim and/or destroy the tire.

Take my story told above, put your wife and kids in the car and change the location from L.A. to Yellowstone for a family vacation. Shredded tire? Your car MUST be towed and let’s hope there is Uber or Taxi service around for you & your family. The closest garage is Earl’s Fillin Station. Earl peers at the tire and says “I ain’t naer seen a tar like dat. I’ll call Omaha and see how soon they can send one, but it’ll be at least a day or three.” So you, your wife and kids get to check into the No-Tell Motel............you get the idea.

As for me, I learned as a Boy Scout: “Be prepared, be prepared, ALWAYS be prepared.“

Never needed to use it, thank goodness, but it gives me great peace of mind, especially when driving out of a metro area.

No spoiler. No AMG Line. No huge wheels. This is a stately, luxury saloon and that’s how I like it.

My photo makes it look sort of an ugly gray, but it is actually black. I wish they had left it chrome as well. Oh well.

Absolutely and could not agree more. Metro convenience does not follow the car on long country road trips. 300-400 miles from a dealership without a spare.....no thanks.

The iridium silver exterior with the black exclusive interior has always been my favorite color combination.
It just simply looks regal. So personally I think it's very exciting, very appealing.

How were you able to still order a 2020? You must tell me!

EDIT- I see now that you ordered it in March. How's the 3D audio compared to the base?

It seems pretty amazing. I’ll talk more about it after listening to it a bit more.

I am really surprised your S560 has the black trunk trim bar. Every 2020 S560 I have seen has the chrome bar (I have looked at hundreds online) S450s have the black bar. I'm certain that was a production error.

As for the spare, I like having a spare too. My wife's Chrysler Pacifica doesnt have one (and doesnt have runflats), it has a can of fix a flat and an inflator, which I don't care for. I like how BMW even though their cars all ship with Run Flats has a $160 option from the factory on the 7 Series for a space saver spare, and they raise the floor of the trunk a little if you have that option so the spare can be stowed there. To me, thats just common sense. Even if you don't ship them that way, let somebody who orders a car order one with a spare.

I don’t know how in the world it could be a “production error.” I cant believe that part could fit anything other than a W222. A change was obviously made, most likely due to a supplier problem, of which there are many these days.
