any concerns with leasing a CPO 2018 s450?

i have been thinking about upgrading

i have some mildly odd things i’m looking for:

1) i want a luxury brand (loaner car service is important to me)

2) i do a lot of highway commuting and have been eating rock chips like crazy across the windshield and the front fascia. entertaining the idea of a CPO car for the first time ever because i know off the bat it isn’t “pristine” and would increase my frequency of turnover (i typically buy new every three to four years and would like to swap out CPO models every two years)

given this context, would leasing a 2018 CPO s450 ($65k, 25k miles) be a good idea? as i mentioned, i’ve never gone the CPO route before so apprehensive about being sold a massively defective car

I'd be terrified if a 3 year old Mercedes s class could be considered a "massively defective car".
Don't worry too much about it. Most S class owners care about their car & at 25,000 miles, no issues should be present.

I'd say go for it. If it doesn't work out, at least you can continue to go the new car route. Could be an exciting adventure. CPO would cover some defects/failures but not all. GL to ya!

Any preowned vehicle can potentially have problems. Even a well cared for recent model S-Class.

All preowned vehicle acquisition advice applies. Check carfax, ask if the vehicle has a clean title with no accidents, theft, lemon, etc. check for all service records.

If your intention from the start is to lease with extended warranty coverage though out the lease period, your risk is fairly well managed.

I know this is just dipping into paranoia now but in searching through the threads here, there are some horror stories where the carfax that is offered by the dealership doesn't match what the customer independently found afterwards. I've also heard some complain of an accident posting late to carfax.

My intention is to lease for 2 years (which will run through the original factory warranty as well as the CPO extended warranty) and then return the car for a new lease. In that way, hopefully the risk will prove to be pretty low.

As long as the car is CPO, there is really no risk (along with extending the warranty). But leasing a used car isn't a smart move and neither is spending $65k for a 3-4 year low end model.

I like looking at the models I want on Autotrader as a lot of them have their CarFax listed. A lot of tires and brakes are replaced. Lol

Tires and brake replacement is almost a default when a car is CPO’d. Nothing unusual...

But I love reading where brakes are replaced at under 10k miles and some cars had six tires replaced.

How so? Who cares unless it is indicative of a design issue.

Noticed that too when I was shopping ... tons of tire, wheel and brake replacement activity show up in the CarFax. Guess it goes with the territory.

Have you tried an S560? The V8 car is so magnificent, hard for me to picture driving the six. But that's just my opinion :-)

I wasn't aware that you could lease a CPO car. Interesting!

I had a '18 S450; have an S560 now. The V8 is wonderful and transforms the car into something much more special....but I recognize that not everyone is about the engine, so get the car you love.

Good luck and many happy miles to you.

You definitely can, but I was told it could only be one model year old. I even found a brand new 2019 on the lot and they said it couldn't be leased.

There are CPO leases but there are not as attractive. Plus there is still a risk of dealing with the lease of a car with a limited warranty. While CPO warranty handles all major components, its coverage is more limited than a new car warranty and one could be responsible for fixing it as part of the lease return.
