20" Rear RFT fails at 7k miles

It looks to me that the tires were underinflated--this is based on the thickness of the tread at the failure point versus the thickness of the running ribs at the center of the tread. If the tread depth at the other side of the tire is "rather similar" to that of the side pictured, this rather confirms the underinflation.
BTW, I, like Katie22, overinflate my tires. In my case to 39 PSI.

Donnymac, Did the Run Flats support the weight of the car after the tread separation?
BTW, I just replaced my Goodyears (due to tread wear) with Michelin Pilot Spots 4 ZP. Very happy with them.

Michelin is my preference, too. Switching once the alignment is addressed.

The runflats did thier job to get me to a tire shop but because it was a sidewall they started to gyrate as I drove down the road. I am guessing they would not have lasted 50 miles like advertised.

Get rid of those crappy RFT's and you'll never need to worry about these blow-outs again. Regular XL tires will not come apart like that, even without the camber adjustor that you installed.

These cars are not Porsches. I've never once had this happen on any car in 37 years of driving...except for recently one of the rear RFT's on my S550. It never happened on my S600 or GL550 with regular tires. It's definitely the RFT's that have this issue on the S-class....and likely almost every other car that has them.

Out of the indy allignment shop. No evidence of any wheelwell issue. Had excessive toe-out which amplifies negative camber wear. All set to specs now and will be back on the road. Plan is to watch the wear and go with Katielinks as needed.
