I have a 2018 S560 with 26,000 miles ( 42,000 Km). In mid Jan of 2021 I discovered an oil leak from the engine. Dealer discovered the turbo oil feed lines were leaking and replaced them under warranty. Getting the parts from Germany took about two months and then the repair took a few days so my car was fixed and returned to me for April of 2021.

This really crushed my trust in the car and I am now worried that it may fail again and take months to get parts and fix. I am out of warranty Dec 2021. The thing is I don't drive this car in summer only winter so I may not have a good chance to get any miles on it to see if it is good or not before warranty ends.

Any advice on keeping the car after warranty expires?
Any thoughts on buying extended warranty $7700 for three years is what the dealer is offering. For that much money I can repair a lot.

I still enjoy the car but need it to be reliable in winter, or should I trade it in. Dealer says this turbo oil leak is super rare, when they fixed the car they removed both turbos and intake.

Looking for your thoughts.

Can you state why you don't drive it in the summer ? If you used it a little this summer (a long trip or 2) you would be able to verify the problem actually was fixed.

Extended warranties are for people who bet against themselves.

The MB extended warranty can be purchased for MUCH less than that price. There are a few dealerships mentioned several times on this board that all sell them for the same discounted price. If you do a search, you'll be able to locate some of the posts.

But there are many other options other than MB. If you think you might keep your car more than an additional 3 years and want coverage longer than what MB has available, then you might want to consider after-market companies. Here is a thread that I started last month that goes into a lot of detail on the different options. Feel free to read all of the following comments after mine and keep in mind that the comments from the woman are the same kinds of things she always says about purchasing warranty coverage past the OEM time period.....because nothing ever breaks on an S-class after it goes outside of the original factory period and all warranty companies are involved in a Ponzi scheme to steal your money.

I typically dont get extended warranties..But then again.I got bad bad luck! so if betting against me helps me to win im all for it!

The reason I don’t drive the car in the summer is because I have an SL 63 that I enjoy driving in the summer. I have never bought extended warranty before. The turbo leak is fixed as I did a few short drives to and from work (80km) and all was well. My concern or worry is that something else may fail, and that I will have to wait an extended time for parts. That and of course cost of repair. My father keeps teasing me that a transmission will fail and will cost huge to replace. My SL is older 2014 and has less tech and has been bulletproof. No problems. The S class just has so much tech that may break but that is what I like about it, all the tech.

Look it was an oil feed line. The part probably cost 100 dollars to replace. I had a air condition line leak on me at about 55000 miles. Cost me 130 for the line and I was back in business.

Take a deep breath and. Enjoy the car.

Read the MB Extended Warrantee, it does NOT cover much....

I CAN'T disagree, but it does covers some, thats why you have to read the exclusive warranty THOUROUGHLY...
I always think its better putting the money away in a 4.25% yield\bond of some sort for a couple of years...then you have some additional options, just in case....

Sure....maybe that part was $100 or so. But what is the cost to diagnose the problem and how many hours of labor to do the repair at upwards of $200/hour for the work depending on your local market? What about the cost of having to replace seals, O-rings, etc? Not to mention that the majority of nuts and bolts in these engines are 1 time use and need to be purchased again for these types of repairs. Your $100 part could easily be a $2-3k repair. The turbos on the 2018+ models are located inside of the motor, so that is a lot of labor to take the thing apart, do the repairs, then put it back together with the aforementioned parts.

I know you want to try to simplify this in order to make it look like repairs on these cars are inexpensive and that having coverage for repairs is a complete waste of money. But that certainly isn't the case at all. People need to determine on their own what their threshold for pain is when it comes to potential repair costs on a high end MB. For many folks, spending $3-5k for insurance coverage for 3-7 years of additional coverage is worth it for peace of mind....especially when they are spending $50k+ on their used MB. The OP may not be able to take a deep breath until he knows he has coverage for expensive repairs. Based on the way that he worded his post, that seems to be the case.

So to the original post writer. There are people here that feel a desperate need to have an extended warranty. If you feel that need then by all means go for it.

Of course you would be buying it against virtually all professional advice about warranties, you would have to ignore the massive data referring to consumer complaints about extended warranties, you would have to ignore the fact that virtually ALL people that buy these warranties NEVER consume more than the cost of the warranties, you would have to realize that most of these warranties have tons of clauses in the fine print that allows them to deny claims for a multitude of reasons.

Now it is true that you could have tons of costly repairs on your car, it is also true that a unicorn could hiding on the back side of the moon. You will hear people talk about all the extreme costs of repairs to their cars. Believe it or not someone from this very forum once told me the V12 engine in my car suffers from ignition and electronic failures. Interesting enough that WAS true over a decade ago but then Mercedes did so many updates on the engine that they called it a NEW engine with none of the problems anymore (article here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz_M275_engine). Simply put this person didnt even know about this and was not telling accurate information about the engine in my car. They didnt even know what they were talking about.

I recently noticed that exact same person that didnt know what they were talking about telling a poster that the problem with their car was it needed a new battery. If I recall the battery in our cars is NOT cheap thinking its approaching 1000 dollars. I told the poster they simply needed to replace the battery in their remote and the problem was solved for about 2 dollars. Once again that person had no clue what they were talking about and were suggesting to someone they needed to spend 1000 dollars on a battery that would not have solved the problem.

So I would caution you to be weary of people that suggest you need an extended warranty based on what COULD happen vs. what is LIKELY to happen. This forum is filled with people with cars that have not blown up in a ball of flames and continue to serve the owners reliably. My car has 75000 miles on it has it has not had some massive failure like some people would want you to be fearful of.

OP, if you have a high tolerance for pain and some potentially expensive repairs won't have any negative financial effect on you, then by all means follow the above advice. Aw hell, sell your car and buy hers (it's for sale) since her loaded up 75k+ mile Maybach edition with the V12 motor is guaranteed to be repair and worry free for the next 10 years. It's got champaign flutes, reclining seats, and a leg rest for the right rear passenger! Nothing will ever break on that car. And nevermind the $15k premium over market price. It's just like having a warranty included since nothing will ever go wrong.

Oh....just remembered....that "all new" V12 is so much better now that it's impossible to find any company that will offer coverage on it (unless you find a lower mileage one that is CPO'd). That's probably because the warranty companies know that absolutely nothing will ever go wrong with them, so what's the point of offering coverage.

I believe I sold my car at the price I am asking, deposit comes this morning and sale next Tuesday. Ill let everyone know how it goes. Oh and my car does not have the Champaign flutes.

It's almost the same as what some people say about folks who purchase extended service contracts on their high end MB cars: There's a sucker born every minute!

Does this mean that you'll no longer be lurking around in this forum being on the ready to offer sage advice to "not do it!" to every moron who is asking about purchasing warranty coverage for their Mercedes? Or will you still be scanning around ready to help us hopelessly stupid folks? If we can't have Dave Ramsey or Susie Orman, we should at least be able to have you to offer great advice. Please don't deprive us. Please! Please! Please!

C'mon man! We don't need this information. If you've been following the great advice of the woman participating in this any many other threads about purchasing warranty coverage for your Mercedes, you'd already know that the science is already settled when it comes to extended warranties. It's just like throwing lots of cash right into your fireplace to stay warm.

To the op you can choose to listen to a person that just the other day in a thread grossly and incompetently told a poster that the issue with their car required a new car battery for around 1000 dollars.

Or you can take advice from a poster that told the same person with the problem to replace the battery in their remote for two dollars. Hey the two dollar repair fixed it.

I just replaced both of the batteries (starter and accessory) for a total of $500 including tax and labor. Probably stupid of me to pay so little for something that should have cost at least $1000 and to replace wear items that are proven to never go bad.

Funny that with a new battery in my key, I only had a few inches of range to open the windows by holding down the remote unlock button. But after the 2 trunk batteries were replaced, I can now stand at least 15 feet away (haven't tested it any longer than that) to open the windows. I guess I'll just chalk it up to a defective new remote battery.

Haven't you been paying attention? It's always stupid to purchase any extended warranty coverage, no matter what the cost! Duh!!

If I didn't spend some time hiding on the back side of the moon, I probably would have been at least $24k more poor than I already am.

But in retrospect, it was probably a very bad decision to purchase that warranty prior to companies no longer offering coverage on V12 cars. If I would have consulted with my crystal ball prior to spending $3300 on that warranty, I could have instead invested that money on Amazon stock or crypto currency and be a multi-millionaire by now. Dammit!

Yes....2 reclining seat as you quoted me as saying. I have 2 reclining seats in the back of my lowly S550 too. But I do not have the executive right rear passenger leg rest like hers since my car didn't come with that package. What's your point, fanboy?

As you stated another option is to sell it to avoid the concerns.
