Question Eyeglass Compartment Repair

The door of the eyeglass compartment in the overhead control panel of my 2015 s550 came detached and needs to be re-attached. There are no broken parts. I can not find any references to replacing or repairing the eyeglass unit, even when the control panel is removed. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Yep, just bring it to your dealer at this point, they can fix anything! They've seen it all.

Hi Steve, Thanks for the reply. Trying to avoid that $$$$$ route. The local MB dealer wanted $1700 to replace 2 rear air springs (basically inflatable bags) on my GL450. Two top-end Arnott bags cost around $350, and the total labor time can’t be over 2 hours on jack stands, less on a lift. So I was hoping someone had a method that doesn’t involve removing the center control panel.

No hands on but if you’re feeling ambitious consider carefully disassembling unit, view underside.

Thanks for the pictures! Somewhat disconcerting. Had hoped for a more serviceable repair.
Is that a battery compartment door?
Looks from the pic like hex or torx bolts hold it together.
Do you have a replacement part number for the unit in case it’s not repairable? Is it the FR200301?
Much appreciated!

$1,700 for the MB dealer to replace two air struts is cheap. Arnott struts are not OEM struts.

Refer to Arnott Air Springs

Just to clarify, this is what I was referring to as the $$$$ cost for the air bags from the MB Dealer.

But they are NOT OEM. You can't look at an aftermarket part and say the dealer was unfairly expensive. You will always pay way less for aftermarket parts and of course less from an independent mechanic.

The price you were quoted for OEM struts and the job done by an MB dealer was an excellent price. Of course its still more than aftermarket struts replaced by an independent mechanic. Its apples and oranges.

People replace Lexus air struts with arnott too on the LS and have had a fair number of problems. If it were my vehicle, I'd gladly pay the $1,700 for the OEM part and job.

You’ve hit the nail on the head. For an initial $500 (material and labor) I can replace the rear air springs (basically balloons) under Arnott’s lifetime warranty. So if I get only 50K miles per pair on a 13 year old GL450 with 260K miles, Arnott warranty replacement makes economic sense. And after the 100K miles, the next set will still only cost $500 (todays money) installed. Just can’t justify investing big bucks when the vehicle is nearing EOL.

Thats a perfectly valid viewpoint and decision, but it still doesn't mean that the dealership was charging you an unfair amount with that price quote, you're not comparing apples to oranges. Dealers are never going to use aftermarket parts.
