What is the current version of the North American map? I'm running v.13 (2019/2020) on my 2015 S550.

Also, does anyone know at what point during the year the new versions are released? I'm assuming they are updated every year.

I reached out to BenzNinja and found the current version of the map for my car's Head Unit. It was (like kafklatsch found) v.15 2021/2022 released on 20 Jan 2021. I had BenzNinja set up the download to my USB drive and purchase the key for me. After a 28 GB download (!) I plugged it in the car and entered the key. Easy and very reasonably priced.

To answer my own question about release dates: It seems that there is not any one time of the year when new versions of the North American maps are regularly released. I say maps because S-Classes can have different HUs (NTG 5, NTG5.2, NTG5.5 etc) depending on the year of manufacture. The different HUs all run a different version of the same map. For example, NTG 5.1 runs v.16 released June of 2021, NTG 5.5 ran v.21 released May of last year and now runs v.22 released this past January. I could detect no real pattern of release timing from year to year nor of from Head Unit to Head Unit.

Yeah, with my 2015 it will always be "sneakernet" updates. At least it's not floppy disks! :O)

Well, I said "very reasonably priced" because it's a classier way to say "cheap". After all it's a Mercedes my dear fellow. ;O)

 

When do nav updates get cut off? I remember with my 2001 C240 not being able to get them after a few years. Since my 2020 is near the end of the model, will Mercedes Benz cut off updates soon? There are some road changes coming up in my area. When *aren't* they changing the roads. I thought I'd wait until the work is done before updating my nav. Sure I can use my phone like everyone else.

However one of the no-cost options on my 2015's build sheet was listed as: "#502 Navigation Map Updates included for 3-years".

I bought the car from the original owner at 32,000 miles and when I first took it in for service (December 2019) the dealership said the computer indicated I was eligible for one more free map upgrade - a full five years after it was originally purchased. So I do know the free updates stay with the car no matter who the owner is and I suspect you are still eligible to be updated "automagically" in the same manner SmokinJoe was.

Strange with my 2018 S560 the dealer says there are no updates just what came with the car in 2018. I’ve given up using the nav anyhow and just use Apple Maps or google maps via the apple car play as there is no longer built in live traffic anymore either

 

I didn’t know live traffic was a thing. When/why did it stop?

If dealer says you get 3 years of updates on a 2020 CPO car, does that mean 3 releases of updates or just until 2023 which might be 1 update?

Are these “official” updates from Mercedes? Cough. Cough.

I would like to see about updating the maps in the navigation. I'm reasonably tech savvy and comfortable venturing into the unknown. I also don't want to have my head on a platter if the update messes up... How reasonably easy is the update and what is the cost?

The car, a 2013 S550, belongs to my elderly parents and the maps for the DC Area are out of date. Mom has been "requesting" the maps be updated. The car is in the shop at the moment, Dad clipped a deer on Christmas Day. I expect the car will be back in another week or so at which point I would be able to do the update.

So far the only North America version I'm finding on the net is NTG 4.5/4.7 2020-V20. This version is being offered by "mbnavupdate.com" for $149.00.
