I do not understand the reluctance to unpair your phone from the car and repair it to the car...I understand not doing a factory reset...

And just adding another data point. I'm driving a W223 S500 loaner at the moment and used wireless CarPlay/Google Maps this morning to get around major congestion on the way home. Didn't crash like in the Golf rental I had in Europe, so that was definitely due to the crappy VW software and not iOS 16.2.

The reboot may have fixed it. I’ve been given two different suggestions which I will try if 16.3 doesn’t fix my problem. If it doesn’t then I’ll factory reset my phone and unpair/repair CarPlay, phone, Bluetooth etc.

I don't understand why you wouldn't take 10 seconds to see if those things solve the problem versus just waiting for 16.3...we know the issue is not with iOS 16.2.

You don't need to mess with Bluetooth, when your phone is connected to CarPlay it severs the BT connection.

I know I’m the one asking for advice. I just thought I’d get to do things when it’s convenient. Are you wanting me to try everything so we can put it in a FAQ?

I’ve already reported that I believe the reboot might have fixed the problem.

I want to thank everyone who gave me advice. I've tested this a few times now and I *think* the problem was resolved. For me it did start with 16.2 but 16.3 did not fix the problem. And I checked every setting and everything looked correct but CarPlay wasn't starting while the iPhone 13 Pro Max was locked.

What I did is kind of backward. I should have deleted in the car first then deleted in the phone. What I actually did is remove the car from CarPlay in the phone. Then I re-paired with the car. When I did that I got the message/option, "Allow CarPlay when locked". Of course, I said "yes". Once I did this it seems to again be working while locked. I didn't make any other changes.

This is really just an FYI. Yesterday I went to use CarPlay again and I had to unlock. Thought this was fixed. I’ve tried everything except factory reset.

Haven’t upgraded to 16.3.1. Was waiting for 16.4. No special reason.

It might be the Accessories setting. I turned it (back?) on.

FWIW, that's off on mine, which I believe is the default. Pretty sure wired CarPlay won't start if you haven't unlocked your phone at least once within the last hour so that the accessory port isn't locked. That's kind of the point of locking the port, so the phone can't be cracked if it hasn't been used within the last hour, but I have never run into this. I use my phone regularly for common tasks, and just looking at the lock screen to check the time unlocks the phone via Face ID, and I use my phone to lock my house when I leave, pay for stuff at stores, checking traffic before getting into the car etc., so it generally gets unlocked multiple times within the last hour to avoid the accessory port from being locked.
