This morning while trying CarPlay with iOS 16.2 I had to unlock my iPhone before CarPlay showed up. At least I'm pretty sure it was locked. I was playing music when I got into the car. The phone unlocked when I opened my wallet style cover. I checked and the setting Allow CarPlay While Locked is set to YES.
Anyone else see this? Previously I was using CarPlay on 15.7.
Occasionally while CarPlay automatically starts it doesn't automatically come to the foreground. I notice it mostly the first time right after an iOS upgrade. In that case go to the home screen in COMAND and then you should see a green CarPlay logo thingy in the title bar. Select that and CarPlay will come to the foreground. That's also how you get back to CarPlay after switching back to COMAND.
Hi Will. I checked today and my car is definitely configured for Auto start. But I still see that I have to unlock my phone iPhone 13 Pro Max. Now I'm pretty sure I already checked my phone for CarPlay settings but I will check AGAIN! Such condition for me has only been true since the 16.2 update. I used my car several times with 15.7 and did not need to unlock my phone. I can only hope that 16.3 will fix this.
The issue is not 16.2, its your phone. My phone is on 16.2 and operates when its unlocked no problem.
Thanks. I read your post. Could you tell me if your phone operates with CarPlay when it is LOCKED no problem? I have no problem when phone is UNLOCKED. Maybe I misunderstood but I thought people were telling me that their phones work with CarPlay when LOCKED. Thank you. It worked for me when locked on 15.7.X.
I will try a few things. I have heard 16.3 is coming out and I will try that.
Did you turn off the phone and then re start it. After I did the 16.2 my battery was draining real fast so I rebooted and been fine sine. Sometimes without doing a restart after upgrades the phones get buggy.

Correct, works fine when LOCKED with 16.2. Same for @SW20S as far as I understood.

I just restarted my phone 5 minutes ago.
I also changed the setting back and forth.
I am not ready to factory reset my phone as this is a minor problem. I was hoping someone else could confirm this issue.
You have had multiple people tell you that 16.2 works when locked for them, the issue is clearly not 16.2.
Hey I am really not trying to be rude. But when I was in IT I didn’t ignore a problem because it works for 20 other people. I tried to find a fix for the 1 person it doesn’t work for.
Maybe this means I backup all my data, factory reset my phone and restore all data. Or I forget the car and repair. Or I try new cables. Or I wait for 16.3. Or ???
How do you explain the fact that this doesn’t seem to be an issue for anybody here but you? Even if it winds up being an issue for a few other people, it can’t possibly be iOS 16.2 since it works fine for most of us. It must be an issue with your specific phone or your specific car. What else makes sense? Nobody is suggesting you ignore the problem but you seem determined to blame iOS 16.2 and that just doesn’t make any sense to me…

Restoring the data may bring the issue back if it is caused by corrupt data as I mentioned in the other thread. So to eliminate that you should factory reset the phone and set it up as a new phone to see if everything works with a clean install. If that works, then you can restore your data. If it still works then you are golden, if not then you know it's your data. It could also be a particular app that you use and we don't. For example Waze in the past had bugs that broke CarPlay. It's when I decided to get rid of Waze, because of all the issues it caused.
@zitsky If I was you, my next step would be to delete the Car from Within the Phone, and then Delete the Phone form within the car. Wipe out the connection. Then reboot both the phone and the car.
Next, reconnect them and see what happens, check both the Car Setting to Start Automatically, and also check the Phone setting to Allow CarPlay when locked.
Thanks. So far have rebooted my phone. I need to do more testing over the next few days. Issue might be resolved. I prefer to do things slowly, one step at a time.
