Key Not Detected

For some time, I've been seeing this message intermittently on the dash. Happens with either key, with or without new key batteries. Very sporadic, may go weeks without it, then it suddenly pops up after stopping for gas or something. Seemed to happen less often after I replaced by the main/starting battery and aux battery last fall, but hasn't gone away completely.

Of course I can take out the start pushbutton and just use the physical key, but wondering why this keeps coming up? Has anyone else experienced this?

Aside from when batteries need to be replaced the only time I've had that happen is when my phone is in the same pocket as my key. The phone seems to mess with the signal.

Thanks, I've been wondering about phone interference.

This happens to me very sporadically as well. Generally first thing in the morning, or if I'm leaving work. But as you say, occurs weeks apart.
Happened before and after I replaced Auxiliary battery, as well as key fob battery. Phone and key are always in different pockets, so I don't believe that is what is happening in my case.

I get this message only when the old battery has died or when I was using 2032 battery instead of the 2025 battery.

It's happened to me in other cars (my W212 has not shown any key related messages ) . I just put the key near the keyless go detector around the steering wheel column and hold a few seconds and it goes away .

Wondering, does this happen to facelift (18 and newer) cars too? If so, how do you get the car started, IIRC the facelift cars no longer have a place to insert a key?

It happened on mine, apparently the fob developed a problem making it go through the battery like crazy (one battery every two weeks). If that happens and it's not detected, you are supposed to put the key fob in a special area in the center console, which will supposedly allow the car to start.

Only in my case it didn't, I kept trying to get the car to detect the fob for 15' without success, until it suddenly worked. Since then I kept a couple batteries in the trunk until I went to the dealership for the annual service, told them about it, they replaced the fob and didn't happen again since then.
