Windshield Crack

My car has a crack in the windshield.
I set up a glass appointment at Safelite via insurance.
is this the route to go?
is it a Benz windshield?
anyone have anything to share about experience with Safelite?

Satellite installers may be fine, but I would strongly recommend MB or OEM (Pilkington?) glass. Don't let them put their bottom-tier glass on your S. Also you may need your cameras re-calibrated upon installation, another reason to just take it to the dealer from the start.

I had the glass roof in my 550 Coupe crack. It was replaced by my insurance. They used Safelight who did the replacement at the local MBZ dealer with the dealer's mechanic supporting the Safelight. The workmanship was excellent. The cost was less than excellent although my insurance and MBZ covered it so no out-of-pocket cost to me.

I would go through the dealer/dealer's bodyshop and insist on real MB glass...

There were some posts on this recently and IIRC there are different windshields based on your car's equipment, so you have to be careful they know and get the right type.

I have also found that if you put the claim into your insurance as a comprehensive claim, instead of a glass claim, you have less issues demanding OEM glass.

at that point I’d just pay out of pocket as that math is off.

What is your comprehensive deductible? An OEM windshield is a $3,000 proposition. Mine is $50.

Safelite is ok

I went through this last week; I had a replacement scheduled through Safelite. Safelite has the aftermarket windshield, but I made the request to have original Mercedes glass installed with no hangups. They were top notch with the install. The technician took his time and was attentive to detail, kept my interior clean and all the cameras were calibrated. I would recommend them but do your research to see which fits best for you.

Just a quick note, I had mine replaced a year ago here in the UK and there are two different colours here, a blue or a green version.
I also had to have the mbc cameras calibrated, all went well.

I did the same thing.
called them and requested the Mercedes windshield.
It pushed my appointment back a week because of ‘supply chain issues’…..

As noted special attention needs to be placed on variant of windshield to be installed. Relevant options include:
HUD
Electrically heated
Magic body control (ABC)

mine is just heated, and they had that info as options for our cars in their system.
Safelite is a huge National company that makes their own glass, so they had to have done an S class before….

I had my windshield replaced by the $tealership and they provided the windshield but Safelite came and installed it. Total was $1250 and yeah, the camera has to be recalibrated and that was covered in that price. My insurance picked it up. About a week later I watched a rock come flying across the median on the I-90 freeway, and I swear I could see it slowly spinning as it got close and closer to my windshield and, yep, starred the brand new glass just like that. I was - - underwhelmed. My insurance will be unhappy to hear about this one I think.

If it isn't cracked but a chip Safelight can do a repair on that which also keeps it from spreading into a crack. I had that done on my SL about 12 years ago and it is still fine today. The fix isn't visible even though I know it's there. Good luck!

Yeah, I went and had the crack filled an hour after it happened, not by Safelite but by a shop called McKinney Glass in Union Gap, WA. It doesn't look like a $65 job to me but I only know how to break 'em, not fix them. The crack didn't spread, true, but it's directly in the sightline of a passenger.

I didn't realize how difficult it was to take a photo of a windshield chip until just now.
I ended up putting a paper towel outside the glass, with a quarter (coin) for reference.
As you can clearly see, it's larger than life.

Windshield chip - post "repair" with a quarter for reference.

Sickening really. I'm about ready to sell the vehicle and I'm going to get it fixed on the day I sell it just prior to signing over the title.

Right. Unfortunately it looks as if it's already starting to crack. Bummer...

Why would you do that, your insurance should cover it....

I don't know who you have for insurance but I can tell you with confidence that my insurance will either increase or they'll simply drop me. I say I'll have it replaced prior to transferring the title because I don't want to sell a car with this and I feel like if I were to go have it done today a rock would hit it tomorrow. Makes zero sense, I get it.

A protective clear film should help against rocks , chips and other elements that would damage the windshield .
Sorry to see that

Would it interfere with the cameras or the HUD? I have a wee little crack (like 1mm, not even close to serious) and I was considering applying a PPF to avoid worse cracks down the line.

I had one replaced on my S560 at Safelite last year. They did a good job, after they got the right part. On my first visit they looked at my windshield and had to order another one because the one they had was not compatible with my car.

Yes, they had to order a Mercedes windshield. You'll not on your bottom left edge there is a Mercedes logo.

Costly from the ins company. I had a $995 deductible and the insurance thew in another !000K.

From a past experience with a ML windscreen crack, I leared that only a Mercedes shield will fit. Might be wrong, but don't think so.

Now I've gotten a bee bee crack in the new S560 windscreen and a lateral crack in the GLS. Need to invest in more XLE or DRLL to pay for new ones. All cracks caused by careless drivers pulling traiers and can't keep the wheels on the fracking road.

Yeppers. If you trade it in at a Mercedes dealership, they'll knock off the price and install of the windshield right quick. Have two cars now with cracks and one was already replaced early last year at Safelite.

Seems to me, they should have 'stop drilled' the crack prior to putting whatever stuff they install in the area. Just mho.
