Tires recommendation for 19"

I have a set of winter tires on my new-to-me facelift W222. It comes with the 19" AMG wheels. I need to purchase a set of summer season tires.

1. Should I get All-Season or Summer tires for the 2nd set?
2. What options are best? I like run-flat in case anything happens so I can drive home, but what brand and type of tires do you recommend?
3. If I buy summer instead of all-season for the 2nd set, how good would summer tires do in some slightly cold days with rain during spring or late summer months before I switch.

You'll get all kinds of different opinions on this but Continental Pro Contact SSR GX were installed by the dealer where I bought my car used Certified at 16K miles. I still have the same front tires on the car a year and a half later at 57K miles and they look maybe 5/8 worn which amazes me. I may be able to get 60K miles out of these tires. The rear tires are another story. The car is RWD and I'm not the easiest driver so the rears wore out about 11K miles ago and I replaced them with the same Contis, so only got around 30K miles or so out of the back tires which still is not bad for a run flat. I agree with you that having the run flats is a little more comfortable that if there is a problem a lot of the time you can drive the car to get the tire fixed or replace. The SSR GX tires are very quiet and comfortable and the car seems to handle well with them, no real complaints with them. They are fairly reasonably priced too. When the Fronts do eventually go all replace all for wheels with the same.

If you are doing two sets then a summer and winter set would make the most sense but if you always drive slowly then all seasons will be cheaper to run.
Temp limit will depend on tire but you can drive most summers to 32F acceptably.
Note that run flat tires have a bit less grip and result in a harsher ride.

For tire recommendations I have Michelin's Pilot Sport 4S in the 65 and Continental's ExtremeContact on a 911, both of which I would recommend.
On the other hand I have Continental's SportContact5 in the SLK55 and I'm not really happy with them.

I have Michelin Pilot Sport 4s on both of my cars, 20" RF on the S and 18" non RF on the SL. I'm very pleased with them on both cars.

Didn’t want to hijack 19” with 20”. Started new thread.

Thanks.

At least personally I like the all seasons as they last longer plus if you do have to drive in a winter climate at some point you can.

Yeah, I've been thinking about the same. Keep the winter set for extreme 2 months deep snow when I am 100% sure nothing works as winter tires, and then leave all other months for All-Season including transitioning months...

Here’s a picture of my drivers front SSR tire with 41000 miles on it. Pretty impressive. I guess my alignment must be good.

I really enjoyed Conti DWS-06 tires. They are excellent in rain, surprisingly good in snow and offer plenty of grip for those runs to the ski area in the summer (fun road!). I didn’t get a lot of miles per set but I’m a real savage. They were on 20” wheels for my 221 S65. I have Michelin on my 222 car (Continental not available in those sizes) and enjoy them but have yet to find the right road and opportunity to savage them.

There are the Continental Pro Contact SSR GX, right? I got a quote of ~$1500 including $150 insurance from Discount Tires on this tire.

Got an idea about high quality tires from all the feedback here by everyone, thanks a lot. Another point I forgot to mention, comfort and road noise are probably even more important to me than thread-life; any thoughts on road noise and comfort from any of these brands suggested earlier or other brands? My previous W222 had NON-RF, and now with my new-to-me W222 facelift, I don't want it to seem like a down-grade if I get the RF. One other difference is that my former W222 had 20", while my newer one now has 19".

It's been 3 years since I was in an S-class, and my new-to-me W222 is arriving in 3 hours . First I will do is to treat her with new shoes!

That 1500 dollars for 4 Conti ssr gx seems steep. I use this seller they are under 1200 for all 4. I assume you have the amg line option in this quote. If not price for base is not much difference ( all same size tires ). Yes the above picture is the Conti gx. I don’t think you’d be disappointed with them. Low noise good ride and great longevity plus run flat so less worries.

Link not attaching. Go to www.tirebuyer.com hit in your vehicle and select the continental pro contact gx from the list. If you’re a risk taker they have some Chinese tires listed for a little more than 100 dollars per tire. Oshi or something like that. No reviews though looks like a nice tread design though lol. Who knows maybe they are not bad.

Anyone want to be a Guinea pig lol. It’s tempting. It does look like a good design although a low 300 AAA rating they are ultra high performance classification. No reviews on them yet.

Don't leave {standard and Grand} Touring tires and {[max] performance} All-Season tires out of the investigation.

Some of this is going to depend on your driving habits and the weather in your driving area..

Still running my General G max AS05's on my '15 S with 19" staggered setup, research some past posts. I have been running the Continentals on my Volvo XC 60 20". Just had Volvo replace them under warranty, at 10k mi. was down to 3/32s, Continental gave me 80% credit on next set, General is a Continental company so I've been assured they will stand behind their warranty. So far the tires have been fine and seem to be wearing OK, keep your tire pressure up, am running 34F-38R. Time will tell, when I bought the Generals, they were $750 a set, now in the 900s. Inflation sucks and no lagimiate reason for it.

Check Tire Rack, Generals have same test ratings and same specs, 5k more mile warranty, and roughly $300 less a set. To me, the S is a Stately Beast, meant to be driven Serenely and is not something you use to drive to, rather something you arrive in...but yes, push Sport button, foot to floor and enjoy the excitement when you want. I also drive a Dual Clutch Twin Turbo BMW Z4 so maybe that explains my above comments.
