W222 new/different touch pad

Can someone explain to me why this W222 in the production video below (at the 2:28) has a different mouse/touch pad design than all W222s? Never seen any W222 model year with that central console or touch pad.

The new style touch-pad allows one to draw letters on the glossy surface,
The old one (ala W221) did not have that draw character capability.

But I don't remember with extreme clarity.

that’s not what an talking about. See the video and note the different style than all other W222s we see today in the US.

I have seen that pad available for sale and wondered what would happen if I plugged it in... I'm thinking it would need to be coded but it would probably work after coding...

Yeah interesting, thats the new style touchpad.

FWIW, I have a GLC loaner with that touchpad right now and I hate it, the wheel is much better...

I agree. I tried that on the GLS, and I hated it. The best tool ever is the wheel we have on the current W222 here in the US. looking again at that video, I wonder of that touchpad style was exclusive to the European market on the short-base version. The vehicle looks awkwardly short and barely as long as the E-class.

No, I have a swb facelift but a 2018 and I don't have that touchpad. Maybe the very late version did get this touchpad? Could be. I have never seen that in a W222 before either.

I believe the US spec 2015+ W222 all have the wheel and gloss touchpad combo. I have seen this “newer style” matte pad on eBay.de for the W222 but the loss of the wheel seems tragic.

I used the new pad in one of the replacement cars they gave me for a bit, a rather atrocious CLA220d* which it felt like it was screaming its last rites when I switched it to sport mode.
I liked the new touchpad in that car, it seemed way easier to control than the shiny touchpad on my W222, but that might be because it was also a combination of the new MBUX UI which allows for more accurate (less laggy, way more responsive) handling. I rarely use the touchpad on my car.

* I also liked how the consumption would show values over 20 litres/100km, whereas mine doesn't. I guess that's probably for the best, consumption on lower velocities on the W222 might have been heart-attack inducing!
