279 water pump failure

It happened. Bearing failure. Somehow it isn’t peeing coolant all over the place. Gave no warning. Drove home from work... no noises. Started it up four hours later to all those lovely sounds of a dead bearing. $250.00 for all needed parts. Doesn’t look bad to do.

Water pump is out. Same procedure as for 221 S65. Couple of bolts hide behind the crank pulley.
Worst part of it is removing the radiator fan. Parts are ordered.

W222 S550 4-Matic Remove Coolant Fan

Hi there. I too have a W222 S550 4-Matic that needs the Oil Cooler, Oil Filter Housing replaced. They're leaking oil pretty bad. Also, I'm replacing the 4 Upper Timing Chain Cap Actuators, 4 Cam Sensor. BUT first things first. I need to remove the radiator fan.
My question, did you have to drain the coolant OR did you have to do anything special to pull the fan up & out? I noticed 2 water hoses connected to both ends of the upper radiator and I'm thinking I can work the fan out if I disconnect the 2 Radiator hoses.

I've attempted to purchase & download an MB S550 Service Manual but these sites are the worst for customer service.

Any reply would be greatly appreciated.

Drain the coolant from the bottom drivers side on the radiator. Remove the coolant hose on the drivers side that goes into the the thermostat.Remove the fan. Your going down a rabbit hole here. The thermostat will be broken inside. You need to remove the thermostat to remove the oil filter housing. There are turbo coolant lines in the way of some bolts for the oil filter housing. They will break if you even look at them wrong. I suggest you spice those.....

Thanks so much for the quick reply. To R\R the Oil Filter Housing, I'm aware I first need to remove the Water Thermostat Housing. I wasn't intending to replace this component but if, as you say, the thermostat breaks when removing the connecting water hose, then perhaps I should go ahead and purchase the Water Thermostat Housing as well.

Yea, see what happens when you remove the thermostat....I went with an aftermarket metal one. Works great!

Hello red996!

Just completed the job:
R/R Oil cooler & gasket. Torqued to specs.
R/R Water Thermostat Housing & gasket. Torqued to specs.
R/R Upper Cam Covers resealed & new bolts
R/R New Actuators & Seals
R/R New Cam Sensors
R/R New Serpentine Belt
Installed Pigtails to Sensors & Actuators
R/R New Turbo Cooling Lines (driver side). Purchased 2 aftermarket Lines, cut away the plastic connector ends, used new rubber tubing to rebuild.

What a job!! Not for the faint of heart. Every bolt put back & tightened to specs.

Turned the key - Waalaa.
Thanks for your tips & insight on getting the job done!

Congratulations!! I know the feeling of the first time you have to spend hours under the hood, then you crank the engine and it purrrs like a kitten. Very few things match that feeling!!

Your 222 S-600 will have a 279 V-12 that is very similar to mine. I got to do it at about 120,000 miles/ eight years of age. Bearing failed in my water pump. Is yours leaking coolant? Good time to give it a fresh serpentine belt, belt tensioner and idler bearings/pullies. Cooling system easy to bleed. Charge coolant doesn't get touched as separate from engine coolant.

No, it has no losses of coolant when it was tested before

If no leakage or noisy bearing your water pump should have a long life yet.

Do change coolant every four years.

Transmission oil every four years or 30,000 miles.

Brake fluid every other year.

Differential oil every five years.

ABC/MBC oil + filter every four years.

She is a wonderful car. Use her more!

A small electric pump will remove fluid from the reservoir. 222 cars don't have bleeders at each corner so changing fluid is suck out old fluid from reservoir.... Add fluid.... Rodeo... Repeat.

Easy work.
