Only bald on the outside edges, not both edges and the entire tire surface was also well worn. The car just went through front tires faster than rear tires. Alignment by both, dealer and quality independent

The tire wear equation has a few variables in the mix.
If your suspension is stock all around, tires at a reasonable psi but not knowing your driving style or conditions, the front wear pattern indicates to much toe-in or positive camber. If your live in the city, I would bet toe issue. Or do you hit the corners a little heavy?
My 2017 just came from a fresh alignment. It lives on open hwys and it’s alignment history is camber/toe of the rears. Fronts not an issue. Trunk carries minimal weight. Car is almost never loaded and is my DD. My previous 2012 had the same issue exact issue.

I've followed this thread for quite some time. I have my 18 S63 at 49psi all around when cold. Pressure goes up to 51 most of the time, and occasionally 52psi when driving for a long time on hot days. 9 month old Michelin PS4 AS tires. Car is super quiet and glass smooth at all times, and doesn't seem to make the ride feel more harsh than when I ran my S550 at 42psi.

What is tire MAX on sidewall? those tires would be super hard and harsh in my experience.
you want soft and cushy lower the pressure - Them german engineers are quite finicky about tire pressures and do not want them blowing up on AUtobahn.

Door jamb says 49/51 F/R for psi. Max tire pressure says 50psi on front and rear tires. Tire pressures were set by tire shop when I bought the tires. I thought they were super high too, but they felt good so I rolled with them. I bought my S550 with run-flats and thought the ride was good, but not exceptional. When I changed to some fairly reasonably priced Pirelli's, Pirelli P-Zero All season suggested by @vinflouen , the ride got much nicer and quieter. This car is actually smoother and quieter than my S550 with the Pirelli's.

You're looking at the wrong sticker. Its confusing but those are max pressures, you should look on your fuel door. It will be much lower, mine is 35. Tire shops over inflate tires all the time. Reduce the tire pressure to the reccomended pressure and you will be astonished by the ride and performance difference.
My rationale is the absolute best performance possible. I'm totally willing to sacrifice ride comfort for performance. Not so I can ever go to the track, just in case I need to make an emergency manuever, or passing on the highway safely. I want max stability, aceleration and stopping power. What's the best tire pressure for that??

lower pressure allows for more contact patch area - hence more grip.
Check F1 they only run mid 20PSI (cars are lighter for sure) but about getting more rubber to touch tarmac...Pirelli does imply a minimum pressure so the tires will cope with the high speed.
This is why MB says to raise pressure for super high-speed driving - to reduce chances of tire from over-heating and hence blow outs.

agree with above - as another example, Porsche recommends over 40psi, for my 911, but anyone who ever has been on track with one airs them down to ~30 to get significantly better grip and lap times.

For best performance, I find that using the pressures on the driver’s door jam sticker are the ones to follow. Steering response and cornering stability are significantly better in corners. My Indy loves these pressures and says they are the best to use. The fuel filler pressures are way lower and better for ride, however sidewalls seem to be too soft and collapse when cornering hard.

In an elevated stressed load, street tires like a higher psi, generating firmer driver feel and lower temps all contributing to tire life of a civilian street tire. Competition tires are a completely different equation built for short life, traction, stress, heat, load and are a disaster off the track.
Think about it…how many pit stops for tires in a F1 or 500 mile race? Good tire articles on www for Indy, NASCAR and F1. Very informative.
Street tire recommendations on fuel filler door are generally fine for normal driving civilian environments. Street tire door jamb data eases into MAX limit arena.
To all the above, Porsche is a great solution and a preferred recommendation!

Guys, we don't have to guess...Mercedes tells us. They put the max pressures on the door, and the pressures they recommend on the fuel door. You should be using the pressures on the fuel door as per the vehicle manufacturer.

I second this. There is no way on earth I will even dare to claim, or believe, that 50 PSI is even a thing for a car like this! I would never even try it. It’s wrong, surely not comfortable, and not as stable no matter whatever kind of illusion one would feel. I surely would rather trust Mercedes engineers than what I read online. Not only that, but being just 1 PSI away from the tire max pressure rating even the cold one is nothing but asking for trouble and risking other’s people life around as well. Am actually shocked that u all were even still debating this. Reading through the various posts sounds like anyway it all started by misreading or misunderstanding where the location of the actual recommended pressure is. Mercedes would gladly recommend 50 PSI if it was safe and best for the car so they can claim higher MPG, but they know it’s not the right number for the car. I mean, seriously, even their recommended tire pressure is exaggerated but at least within the reasonable range.
